ORLANDO, Fla. \u2013 Avian flu was reportedly present in a wild bird found dead at Lake Davis Park in Orlando, prompting a new warning from the city.<\/p>\n

Residents recently notified the city of the deaths of several wild birds at the park, as well as how one of the birds had tested positive for avian influenza during a necropsy, according to a news release.<\/p>\n

The city added that it had not independently confirmed the information and was acting out of an abundance of caution.<\/p>\n

\u201cA\u202ftop priority of the city is the safety and well-being of our residents,\u202fstaff\u202fand the preservation of local wildlife,\u201d the release states. \u201c(…) There are\u202fa number of\u202freported cases of Avian Influenza throughout the state.\u202fOut of\u202fan abundance of caution,\u202fresidents are\u202furged not to touch or handle any birds that appear unwell\u202for are deceased.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nearby, on the other side of State Road 408, at least 32 bird deaths at Lake Eola Park<\/a> have recently been linked to avian flu. <\/p>\n

Andrew Marshall, a volunteer caretaker for Lake Eola\u2019s swans, told News 6 about a petition he started<\/a> to urge more city investment into keeping the birds\u2019 habitat a clean one.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey rely on human care and human intervention to help give them the quality of life they deserve,\u201d he said. \u201c(…) If you\u2019ve been down to the park, you\u2019ve seen some of the trash that is constantly in the lake. It\u2019s mucky. It\u2019s disgusting.\u201d<\/p>\n

The city is sharing guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that states while avian influenza can be transmitted to humans, it\u2019s extremely rare, with only one case reported in the U.S. since 2022.<\/p>\n

It is recommended the community take the following measures to protect themselves: <\/p>\n

-Avoid direct contact with birds and only\u202fobserve\u202fthem from a distance.\u202fThis goes for both people and pets.\u202f<\/p>\n

-Additionally, avoid contact with any excrement from birds.\u202f\u202f<\/p>\n

-It\u2019s\u202frecommended that people remove their shoes when entering one\u2019s home and cleaning them off if contamination is suspected.\u202f\u202f <\/p>\n

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Foundation\u2019s website states it\u2019s currently monitoring for avian influenza in birds found sick or dead of unknown causes and needs to know about such animals in order to investigate and test die-offs.<\/p>\n
