The 21st annual \u201cDing\u201d Darling Lecture Series will continue with wildlife photographer and author, biologist, and Florida resident Kirsten Hines on Jan. 29 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. at The Roost at the J.N. \u201cDing\u201d Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel.<\/p>\n

The author of nine books, she will focus her lecture on her photographic birding guide, \u201cBirds of Florida.\u201d Designed for birders of all levels, it covers 310 species illustrated by more than 450 of Hines\u2019 photographs taken across the state. Concise text for each species includes information on identification, songs and calls, behavior, distribution, habitat, and seasonality. The book also includes insights into some of Florida\u2019s top birding locations with notes on accessibility.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve traveled to every continent, not to check them off my list, but to appreciate the vast and diverse beauty housed on our planet,\u201d she said. \u201cI trained as a biologist, getting a master\u2019s degree before realizing that the stories I wanted to tell were not in data, numbers and statistics. I came to realize that creative non-fiction writing and a camera were my tools.\u201d<\/p>\n

A book signing will follow the lecture.<\/p>\n

The \u201cDing\u201d Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge co-hosts the series with the refuge and through financial support from sponsors. Friends of the Refuge is sponsoring this lecture.<\/p>\n

\u2013 April 9: Author and conservationist Tina Morris, \u201cReturn to the Sky: The Surprising Story of How One Woman and Seven Eaglets Helped Restore the Bald Eagle\u201d*<\/p>\n

Seating is limited on a first-come basis. Attendees are welcome to bring their own lawn chairs. Most of the open-air seating is under cover, however the DDWS suggests sunhats, sunscreen, bug spray and outdoor attire.<\/p>\n
