MIAMI (WSVN) – Police are investigating reports of shots fired near The English Center in Miami, prompting a brief lockdown at the adult education campus, Miami-Dade County Public Schools officials said.<\/p>\n
According to M-DCPS, Friday\u2019s lockdown was ordered due to police activity unrelated to the school. The lockdown has since been lifted.<\/p>\n
7News cameras at the scene captured a Honda sedan parked outside the school with a shattered rearview mirror that appeared to be consistent with damage from a gunshot. Police K-9s were seen canvassing the area for shell casings. A young man was also seen in handcuffs.<\/p>\n
7Skyforce was over the area after the call came in around 11 a.m. Cameras captured Miami Police canvassing a two-block area.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne individual was determined to have been likely the culprit, and this situation has been brought to a close. No one was hurt,\u201d said City of Miami District 4 Commissioner Ralph \u201cRafael\u201d Rosado.<\/p>\n
Neighbors say they heard five or six shots ring out next to a park where children were playing, a school, and a busy roadway.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat happens on the day that I show up to bring my grandkids, and I\u2019m the one who called 911,\u201d said area resident Mike Martinez.<\/p>\n
Martinez says he was at Douglas Park, near Southwest 37th Avenue and 27th Lane, when he noticed a suspicious group of people.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey would cover their face every time I was looking at them. I knew they were up to no good,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Not long after, he said another group of young people arrived, and things escalated.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll of a sudden, they started jogging around the corner, and then I heard like six gunshots,\u201d said Martinez.<\/p>\n
Parents were seen gathered outside the campus, waiting for the lockdown to be lifted so they could pick up their students.<\/p>\n
Video from inside the campus shows students watching the police investigation from the windows.<\/p>\n
Maria Sierra told 7News via video call that students were scared because they didn\u2019t know if they were in danger.<\/p>\n
The English Center serves adult learners and also offers a GED program for students ages 16 and older.<\/p>\n
Area residents were also questioning the police.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s very concerning because you don\u2019t know what\u2019s going on or if your life is at stake or what or why,\u201d said Claudia Ramirez.<\/p>\n
\u201cI heard five or six shots. I thought this was a shootout, you know?\u201d said a man.<\/p>\n
No injuries have been reported, as the City of Miami Police continue to investigate.<\/p>\n
Detectives have detained people for questioning, but as of Friday afternoon, no arrests have been made.<\/p>\n
