The City of Miami Commission approved a resolution to begin the negotiations of the transfer of the management of the iconic Tower Theater back to Miami-Dade College during the Jan. 8 commission meeting.<\/p>\n
The item was sponsored by Mayor Eileen Higgins and District 3 Commissioner Rolando Escalona.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Tower Theater holds a special place in the heart of our city as a cultural and educational landmark,\u201d said Mayor Eileen Higgins. \u201cUnder Miami Dade College\u2019s stewardship, this iconic space will continue to uplift Little Havana\u2019s vibrant arts scene and small business community. I look forward to spending many evenings in this beautiful theater as we celebrate 100 years of stories, creativity, and community.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Tower Theater is more than a building \u2014 it\u2019s a symbol of Little Havana\u2019s cultural identity. Partnering with Miami Dade College allows us to protect its historic legacy while activating it with programming that reflects our community, supports the arts, and keeps this iconic space alive and accessible,\u201d Escalona said. \u201cWe will also guarantee ourselves that this agreement includes explicit safeguards and enforceable protections to preserve the city\u2019s assets and ensure transparency, accountability, and responsible stewardship.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are taking a responsible and forward-thinking step to ensure this historic venue is professionally managed, financially sustainable, and continues to serve our community for generations to come,\u201d Escalona added.<\/p>\n
\u201cMiami Dade College has a long-standing commitment to the arts, film and community engagement,\u201d said Maryam Laguna Borrego, senior vice president and chief operating officer at Miami Dade College. \u201cWe look forward to working collaboratively with the City of Miami, community leaders, local organizations, artists and residents to ensure the theater remains an active, inclusive, and welcoming cultural space.\u201d<\/p>\n
