{"id":13252,"date":"2025-10-21T01:23:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-21T01:23:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/13252\/"},"modified":"2025-10-21T01:23:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T01:23:07","slug":"man-accused-in-deadly-pompano-beach-hit-and-run-faces-judge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/13252\/","title":{"rendered":"Man accused in deadly Pompano Beach hit-and-run faces judge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">POMPANO BEACH, Fla.  \u2014 The man accused in a deadly hit-and-run crash has since appeared before a judge. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Shalom Marcus made his first court appearance last week, charged in the death of 40-year-old Joey Henriquez. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The crash occurred in the early morning hours of Oct. 12, when Henriquez was struck and killed on North Palm Aire Drive in Pompano Beach. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He was walking across the street with his bicycle when officials said the driver of a Chevy Trailblazer slammed into him and took off. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cHe had a whole life ahead of him to live and was just a minute away from home,\u201d said Michelle Zymet, Henriquez\u2019s sister. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.local10.com\/news\/local\/2025\/10\/19\/family-seeks-justice-after-man-killed-in-pompano-beach-hit-and-run\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.local10.com\/news\/local\/2025\/10\/19\/family-seeks-justice-after-man-killed-in-pompano-beach-hit-and-run\/\">Family members are trying to stay strong<\/a>, leaning on each other for support. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cGetting that call, I almost collapsed on the floor,\u201d said Linda Cuevas, Henriquez\u2019s mother. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Their devastation has ignited their determination to see the accused driver be held responsible for fleeing the scene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cFive or ten minutes later, comes back, circles around and then just takes off again,\u201d said Cuevas. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Henriquez was rushed to the hospital with a severe brain injury, but did not survive. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Marcus was charged with fleeing the crash. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In court, prosecutors said Marcus admitted to driving the car and to drinking at three different bars in Delray Beach. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Henriquez\u2019s family are still searching for answers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWhy would you leave my brother there lying on the floor.
