The Leon County School Board is facing at least two budget cutting scenarios. But the final outcome will depend on what the Florida Legislature does this year.<\/p>\n
Superintendent Rocky Hanna’s first option is to cut the district’s spending by $6.7 million. Board Chair Marcus Nicolas says that avoids having to close schools and lay off teachers.<\/p>\n
“We treasure our students, we treasure our schools, so we wanted to hold them harmless.”<\/p>\n
the second, much more drastic option, could slash more than $13 million. To avoid that, the board is now looking at boosting income. With some in the legislature aiming to cut or even eliminate property taxes, Nicolas says doubling the school supporting half-cent sales tax share might work.<\/p>\n
“I would love that one-cent sales tax recommendation! I know that has to be a legislative push, but (I) absolutely love that recommendation because I do know that many in our community are tax fatigued, so I know that, too.”<\/p>\n
