TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A Tallahassee church is helping families meet basic needs through a monthly outreach program offering free baby and children\u2019s items.<\/p>\n
Calvary Chapel Tallahassee opens its \u201cKids Closet\u201d to the community on the first Monday of every month, providing clothing, diapers, baby gear and other essentials at no cost. <\/p>\n
\u201cPeople really want beautiful things and things that are quality and that look nice and feel nice to put on their child,\u201d said one volunteer, Andrea Roberts.<\/p>\n
The program, launched four years ago, is run entirely by volunteers and supported through donations.<\/p>\n
Roberts said the goal is to meet practical needs while creating a welcoming, respectful environment for families facing difficult circumstances. \u201cWe had this idea to set it up like a little boutique and really dignify the shopper and not feel like you\u2019re giving them a handout, but just providing a space where they could be respected and loved,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Families are given a bag and can fill it with as many items as they need. Roberts said there\u2019s a line down the sidewalk each month for families that depend on the closet. <\/p>\n
\u201cPeople that come through our doors, they\u2019re really hurting. They are going through really hard time,\u201d the volunteer said. She added that some shoppers are newly single parents or are navigating an unexpected pregnancy.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s no judgment, there\u2019s just love and concern,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The Kids Closet is open to families in Tallahassee and the surrounding areas. The next giveaway will be held Feb. 2 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the church, located at 8614 Mahan Drive.<\/p>\n
Donations of new or gently used baby and children\u2019s items are always needed.<\/p>\n
