Vern Buchanan to <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/776257-vern-buchanan-to-retire-from-congress-after-20-years-of-service\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">retire<\/a> from Congress wasn\u2019t made lightly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With two decades of seniority and serving as the Vice Chair of Congress\u2019 most powerful committee, the Longboat Key Republican wields substantial power for Florida in the House.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But ultimately, the 75-year-old said the Bradenton area deserves <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/776292-who-will-run-to-succeed-vern-buchanan-in-congress\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">fresh blood<\/a> in Congress. After mulling a decision over the last three months with wife Sandy, Buchanan announced that he would not seek another term.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe thought that it was probably time to make a change in terms of the region. We\u2019ve got a lot of talented people,\u201d Buchanan told Florida Politics. \u201cAnd you know, I know I\u2019ve been there a long time. But I think it\u2019s time to give other folks an opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">National headlines about his retirement listed him as part of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/florida-gop-rep-vern-buchanan-retire-adding-wave-house-exits\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">exodus<\/a> of Republicans departing Congress ahead of a Midterm cycle when Democrats could win a House majority. But Buchanan scoffed at the suggestion.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhdfirm.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/20-MHD-Florida-Politics-V1_1-728x90-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-316235\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIf that would have factored into it, I would have been gone long ago,\u201d Buchanan said. \u201cI did work for all these different Presidents, and we\u2019ve been in and out of the majority. No, you just try to work through those and try to find a way you can work with the other side. People that know me know that I\u2019m pretty bipartisan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">His decision caps a tenure that saw him rise from a junior Congressman elected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/republican-named-winner-in-fla-house-race\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">by the skin of his teeth<\/a> to being Vice Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee and the longest-serving member of Congress representing Southwest Florida. He\u2019s the Republican co-Chair of Florida\u2019s congressional delegation, and an effective lawmaker who saw 51 legislative accomplishments signed by four Presidents, two Republicans and two Democrats.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Buchanan is declining to endorse a successor right now. He also committed to serving out his final term, saving the state the cost of another Special Election.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He notably said he had consulted with his son, state Rep. James Buchanan, about the decision to retire. Many wondered if the younger Buchanan would run to succeed his father in Congress, though James Buchanan seemed to put those rumors to rest in comments to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/fineout\/status\/2016255540892999924\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">POLITICO<\/a>. \u00a0The retiring Congressman said he did not expect his son to run for the seat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cHe\u2019s running for this <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/768088-james-buchanan-powers-into-senate-race-with-football-themed-ad-on-grit-and-quiet-work\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">state Senate seat<\/a>, and that looks pretty good. And if he ran for our seat, I\u2019m sure he\u2019d be competitive and probably win it,\u201d Vern Buchanan said. \u201cBut I think when you\u2019ve got a young family, it\u2019s tough to haul them off to Washington.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chpk.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-746910 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/25JF-7.9.25-FL-Politics-Ads-728X90-V2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Buchanan said time with his own family weighed heavily on the choice not to run again. He has 10 grandchildren under the age of 11. None were born when he first won election in 2006.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWorking in D.C. takes most of your time away,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Looking back at his career, Buchanan points to accomplishments during his tenure, chief among them $28 million secured for the Sarasota National Cemetery. He also touted cutting taxes on small businesses by roughly 20% during his years working on the Ways and Means Committee.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He made a high-profile run to chair that committee in 2023, but lost to U.S. Rep. Jason Smith of Missouri. Smith praised Buchanan\u2019s work after news broke of his retirement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cVern has been a longtime friend and colleague on the Ways and Means Committee and a steadfast fighter for the people of Southwest Florida,\u201d Smith posted on X. \u201cHis business expertise of more than 30 years was instrumental to the creation and overwhelming success of the 2017 Trump Tax Cuts and the passage of the Working Families Tax Cuts. He leaves behind an incredible legacy here in Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Buchanan said he has always tried to move past the divisiveness of wins and losses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI think it worked out good. I\u2019m the Vice Chairman of the committee. I\u2019ve got a good working relationship, and it\u2019s actually allowed me a little more time and freedom to have some of the other things I want,\u201d Buchanan said of his work on Ways and Means.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cOtherwise, I\u2019d have been traveling a lot more. But as Vice Chairman, I\u2019ve got a lot of responsibility working with all the committees and in the team, and it\u2019s worked out pretty good for Jason and I. It\u2019s always tough up front, when you lose a race by a vote or two or something. But you know, that\u2019s history, and the goal is to do the best we can for the committee, because the country\u2019s counting on Ways and Means to get things right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He also worked closely with Democrats as the Florida delegation\u2019s Republican co-Chair. He developed relationships across the aisle with fellow co-Chairs, first with the <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/395348-hastings-dies-84-cancer-battle\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">late<\/a> U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings, a Fort Lauderdale Democrat, and more recently with U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a Weston Democrat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIf it\u2019s something Florida oriented, we want to do it on a bipartisan basis,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ll bring more clout to it when you\u2019ve got both sides working together. We haven\u2019t done quite as much as I\u2019d like, but I\u2019m hoping this last year, we will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On more partisan matters, he acknowledges it has been harder to work in a narrowly divided Congress in recent years, sometimes more frustrating than even when he was in a minority.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a tougher environment than it was. Back then, we had a lot more seats that we could work with, or the other side had more seats to work with,\u201d he said. \u201cYou can get more done. Whether you like it or not, you can get more done. But when you\u2019ve got a virtual tie in terms of the number of members, whether on either side, it\u2019s just difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Buchanan doesn\u2019t expect to run for another office, but still expects to stay involved. He still wants to see a balanced budget amendment passed to restrain federal spending, something he actively pursued throughout his career.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He feels confident Florida will also continue to thrive, in part thanks to state policies focused on economic growth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cPeople are coming here. It\u2019s not just the weather, it\u2019s also the business climate, which has created a lot of jobs and opportunities for people,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m very bullish on Florida.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The decision by U.S. Rep.
