ORACLE PHOTO\/VIOLET VASQUEZ PIMENTEL<\/p>\n<p>Showing school spirit shouldn\u2019t feel like buying a luxury item, but the release of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usforacle.com\/2025\/09\/03\/usf-partners-with-lululemon-merchandise\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lululemon USF merchandise<\/a> on Thursday suggests otherwise.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The collaboration pairs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/best-activewear\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one of the most popular<\/a> athletic brands with Bulls branding, offering over a dozen items priced from $40 to more than $100.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lululemon is widely known for durable materials and athletic wear designed to last, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.lululemon.com\/help\/quality-promise\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the company\u2019s quality promise.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even if the quality justifies the cost, Bulls merchandise is still marketed toward a student population with limited budgets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When university-branded apparel becomes financially inaccessible, it shifts from representing campus pride to representing campus exclusivity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A Lululemon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bkstr.com\/usfstore\/product\/w-scuba-ovrszd-lon-white-m-l---403193-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">women\u2019s crewneck sweatshirt<\/a> sells for $140 despite only having the words \u201cSouth Florida\u201d stitched across the chest.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bkstr.com\/usfstore\/product\/everywhere-belt-ba-black-1siz--905459-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Everywhere Belt Bag,<\/a>\u201d big enough to hold a phone and a wallet, costs $55.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re willing to spend $150, a pair of black sweatpants featuring a Bulls logo is also available.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For many students, these high prices would be justifiable if the designs felt special \u2014 but that isn\u2019t the case.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The university name and the Bulls logo are already part of the USF Bookstore\u2019s standard merchandise. The new collection feels as though Lululemon took its existing clothing and simply ironed on our logo.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usforacle.com\/2025\/10\/15\/opinion-usf-shows-that-college-is-what-you-make-of-it\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OPINION: USF shows that college is what you make of it<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since becoming a USF student in fall 2024, I\u2019ve consistently heard complaints about the Bookstore from roommates, friends and classmates.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The complaints range from overly simple sweatshirt designs to limited variety and prices that feel too expensive for university apparel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some students have long wanted better-designed and more appealing merchandise, making the Lululemon partnership feel like a long-awaited opportunity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Instead, it highlights a growing disconnect between student budgets and university-branded apparel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.lululemon.com\/p\/women-shorts\/Hotty-Hot-Short-HR\/_\/prod9250076\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lululemon\u2019s lined shorts<\/a> typically sell for around $68. The same shorts with a Bulls logo cost $90.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The logo itself felt thin and cheap compared to the rest of the material, which made me doubt whether the price increase is justified.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Many college students experience financial insecurity and need to work just to afford gas, groceries and rent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although about 71% of students in the U.S. receive financial aid, it is often insufficient to meet their total expenses, according to a 2024 study by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trellisstrategies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/SFWS-Aggregate-Report_FALL-2024_FINAL.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trellis Strategies<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is unrealistic to expect students to spend that much on merchandise.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usforacle.com\/2025\/09\/03\/usf-partners-with-lululemon-merchandise\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">USF partners with Lululemon, merchandise to launch in late fall<\/a><\/p>\n<p>During a 30-minute visit to the Bookstore on Friday, I observed students browsing the Lululemon section and reacting to the prices \u2014 but only saw one student make a purchase.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Most looked at the items, checked the price tag and walked away.<\/p>\n<p>Ellery Pierce, a sophomore biomedical sciences major, said she was browsing the section out of curiosity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI only came here to see the Lululemon section, but I\u2019m just looking because it\u2019s too expensive,\u201d said Pierce.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I also overheard a nearby student tell a friend they wanted a \u201ccool polo\u201d from Lululemon, but gave up on it because it was \u201cway too expensive.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other USF students visiting the Bookstore said they did not bother checking the prices because they were already turned off by one of the color choices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A bright green shade, listed by Lululemon as \u201cGully Green,\u201d appears on multiple items in the collection.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Maria Mejia, a sophomore finance major, said she disliked the colors used in the collection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe green they chose is horrible,\u201d Mejia said. \u201cDarker green is so much better.
