DAVIE, Fla. \u2014 The Davie community remained shaken a day after a shooting in the parking lot of a local beauty school left one person dead and another in critical condition<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Davie police said the shooting occurred Tuesday afternoon outside the Aveda Institute of South Florida, located at 4186 S. University Drive, just north of Griffin Road.<\/p>\n

Julia Ross, a spokeswoman with the Davie Police Department, said officers found two people with gunshot wounds in the school\u2019s parking lot. <\/p>\n

\u201cOne individual was pronounced deceased on scene. A second was transported to a local hospital in critical condition,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

Police on Wednesday said the individuals involved in the shooting were known to each other and had previously been in a relationship. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe shooter, a 25-year-old male, was transported yesterday to a local area hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and later succumbed to those injuries,\u201d Davie police wrote in a statement released to Local 10 News on Wednesday afternoon. <\/p>\n

Police also wrote \u201cout of respect for those involved, no victim information is being released. Our department has been in direct communication with the families affected by this incident.\u201d <\/p>\n

Students and nearby residents described chaotic scenes as shots were fired just after 2 p.m.<\/p>\n

Emily Sosa, a student at the institute, said students barricaded themselves inside the building until officers escorted them to safety.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe heard there was a shooting going on. Everyone was kind of running around frantically, so we didn\u2019t know if he was inside or outside or what was going on,\u201d Sosa said.<\/p>\n

The shooting has stirred memories of past local tragedies. <\/p>\n

Sosa said one of her classmates had been affected by the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, making the incident especially traumatic. <\/p>\n

\u201cAll that trauma coming back and being so close to the anniversary of the Parkland shooting is very scary,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Authorities released 911 calls that captured the fear of those nearby, including reports of gunfire outside and a person lying in a car.<\/p>\n

Video from Sky 10 showed the scope of the law enforcement response, with nearby St. David Catholic School and Burkhard\u2019s Tractor & Equipment temporarily placed on lockdown. <\/p>\n

Richard Burkhard, the owner of that business, said he kept employees inside for their protection after hearing gunshots.<\/p>\n

Detectives spent hours at the scene, focusing on a white car later covered with a brown tarp and interviewing witnesses. Authorities said the incident poses no ongoing threat and no additional suspects are being sought.<\/p>\n

Nearby residents described the scene as frightening. Cindy Santaita, who lives nearby, said she saw students crying outside the school. <\/p>\n

\u201cI feel really bad for whoever was hurt there, and their poor parents who have to get this news,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

No other details about the shooting were immediately released. <\/p>\n
