Award underscores university\u2019s role in preparing future architects<\/p>\n
Florida A&M University (FAMU)\u00a0professor\u00a0Craig Huffman, AIA, and his team at Huffman Associates\/ Studio for Architecture has received a
\n 2025 Unbuilt Merit Award from the American Institute of Architects\/Tallahassee Chapter
\n (AIA Tallahassee), for their Micro Suites \/ Co Housing Project.<\/p>\n
The award was presented last month during AIA Tallahassee\u2019s design awards program,
\n which honors architects, educators and community leaders whose work demonstrates design
\n excellence, leadership and a commitment to advancing the profession.<\/p>\n
The honor underscores FAMU\u2019s continued role in securing world-class talent to prepare
\n future architects and design professionals while maintaining strong ties to industry
\n experts.<\/p>\n
Huffman\u2019s design, which will provide affordable housing for students, is currently
\n under construction at a site near Gaines Street and will be available for occupancy
\n in August. The building will house approximately 18 to 20 residents and will allow
\n each student to live independently while also inhabiting a shared communal space.
\n Each suite includes a private bedroom, bathroom and kitchen area, with access to shared
\n areas within the apartment.<\/p>\n

Huffman said the recognition reflects the collaborative nature of both teaching and
\n practice and mentioned his team considered students\u2019 viewpoints during the design
\n process. \u201cThis award connects with the educational mission of the university and the
\n project types that affect everyone in the community.\u201d<\/p>\n
Huffman serves as a professor for FAMU\u2019s School of Architecture + Engineering Technology
\n (SAET), where he teaches senior and graduate level design studio courses, as well
\n as advanced architecture theory and technology classes. His work, which includes urban
\n design, sustainability and community-centered practice, also emphasizes the role of
\n architecture in shaping equitable, affordable, and resilient communities while preparing
\n students for professional practice.<\/p>\n
\u201cProfessor Huffman exemplifies the connection between academic instruction and the
\n profession,\u201d said SAET Dean Andrew Chin, Assoc. AIA. \u201cHis dedication to students and
\n service reflects the values of architecture as a public good.\u201d<\/p>\n
