License to steal? Woman charged with theft, criminal mischief in license plate theft<\/a><\/p>\nReliving this again left Zeigler\u2019s mother, Alacia Ford-Barron, shattered.<\/p>\n
“The audacity of him (Smith) to even think that he can get away with what he did and just come out and live his life freely. I’m broken. I’m not going to even lie. I am. I am broken. I am. I’m a broken mother,\u201d said Ford-Barron.<\/p>\n
According to court documents, Smith requested a judge grant him a furlough, or temporary release from the Broward County Jail, because his fianc\u00e9e is pregnant and expected to give birth on Thursday at a hospital in Davie. Those documents show Smith agreed to be released with an electronic monitoring device on and a curfew.<\/p>\n
Ford-Barron recounts the defense’s arguments in a Broward County courtroom on Wednesday morning for why Smith should be granted permission to leave for the day.<\/p>\n
“I felt was untrue, you know, maybe you just doing your job, but, you know, let’s speak facts. If something happens to your child with you, you know, but she spoke on behalf, saying, \u2018He (Smith) was trustworthy. He was getting a chance to be a great father, the opportunity and that he would turn himself back in because what he did last time,\u2019 that upsetted me real bad,\u201d said Ford-Barron.<\/p>\n
Ford-Barron says the judge didn’t let her speak during the hearing, but she knew her presence was felt in the courtroom.<\/p>\n
“I want him (Smith) to feel and see what I\u2019m going through, and maybe it might he might start understanding once he become a father. But I need him to feel me. I need him to understand that Myrah has a whole- how can I say it? A whole army behind her. And he needs to understand that I\u2019m not giving up,\u201d said Ford-Barron.<\/p>\n
The judge ultimately denied Smith’s request.<\/p>\n
“I really applaud Judge Coleman, I know he didn’t make the decision because of me. He made decision because that’s his job, you know, as a judge, but I want to thank him for making the correct decision, you know, and not a careless decision,\u201d said Ford-Barron.<\/p>\n
Relieved, empowered, and heard.<\/p>\n
It was feelings, Ford-Barron says, she felt for the first time in a long while following that decision.<\/p>\n
“I\u2019m not only standing for my daughter’s voice, but I\u2019m also standing to make sure I try to protect everybody else you know, and I want this. Myra’s death really hit a lot of people. It touched a lot of people,\u201d said Ford-Barron.<\/p>\n
Ford-Barron says Zeigler would have turned 20 this past December.<\/p>\n
As she mentioned, her daughter\u2019s death touched a lot of people.
