{"id":135574,"date":"2026-01-28T22:45:50","date_gmt":"2026-01-28T22:45:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/135574\/"},"modified":"2026-01-28T22:45:50","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T22:45:50","slug":"florida-house-advances-new-proposal-to-limit-increases-in-property-taxes-under-the-save-our-homes-limit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/135574\/","title":{"rendered":"Florida House advances new proposal to limit increases in property taxes under the Save Our Homes limit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/miami\/news\/florida-house-property-tax-proposals-move-forward\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">A third House proposal<\/a> to reduce property taxes is ready to go to the full House, while the Senate has not put forward a plan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Republican-dominated House Ways &amp; Means Committee on Tuesday voted 10-4 along party lines to support a proposed constitutional amendment (HJR 213) that would limit increases in taxable values for homesteaded property under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/miami\/news\/proposal-backed-to-phase-out-florida-property-taxes-desantis\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Save Our Homes<\/a> cap to 3% over three years. The Save Our Homes limit is currently 3% a year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The proposal also would limit increases in taxable values of non-homesteaded property to 15% over three years, rather than the current 10% a year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re not cutting anybody&#8217;s ability to operate,&#8221; Rep. Griff Griffitts, a Panama City Beach Republican who is sponsoring the proposal, said. &#8220;It&#8217;s going to require<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/miami\/news\/florida-house-panel-explores-property-tax-cuts-weighs-impact-on-local-governments\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> local governments to make hard decisions<\/a>, to prioritize what they want to spend on. That&#8217;s something we all do in our households.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Democrats and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/miami\/news\/florida-local-governments-defend-spending-as-state-pushes-for-property-tax-cuts\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">local-government officials are worried<\/a> that reduced property-tax revenue could lead to decreased services and shift the tax burden to renters and businesses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You can&#8217;t say that they (local governments) need to figure it out when we are part of the problem,&#8221; Rep. Robin Bartleman, D-Weston, said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When we are continuously cutting off the legs of their (local governments) stools, when we are continuously passing unfunded mandates to them, what are they to do?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The other proposals ready to go to the full House would phase out non-school homestead property taxes over the next decade (HJR 203) and increase the homestead property-tax exemption for residents who have property insurance (HJR 209).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/miami\/news\/desantis-property-taxes-jeff-brandes-facing-south-florida\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Gov.
