{"id":135767,"date":"2026-01-29T01:49:21","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T01:49:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/135767\/"},"modified":"2026-01-29T01:49:21","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T01:49:21","slug":"bill-protecting-florida-college-campuses-from-active-shooters-advances-98-7-the-gator","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/135767\/","title":{"rendered":"Bill Protecting Florida College Campuses from Active Shooters Advances | 98.7 The Gator"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(Tallahassee, FL) &#8211; Florida lawmakers advanced a bill Tuesday that hardens college and university campuses against an active shooter. <\/p>\n<p>The bill is an extension of a 2018 law, post Parkland, requiring every public school in Florida to have armed law enforcement, or armed guardian on campus.<\/p>\n<p>State Rep. Michelle Salzman says her bill, <a href=\"https:\/\/flhouse.gov\/Sections\/Bills\/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=83394\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">HB 757<\/a>, is in response to the mass shooting last year on the FSU campus that killed two and injured six.  <\/p>\n<p>The active shooter college safety measure would allow trained individuals to carry a weapon, require a campus rapid alert system that communicates with law enforcement, and reunification plans for parents to find their kids. <\/p>\n<p>In addition to armed guardians, anyone who shoots a weapon within one thousand feet of a school would be charged with a felony and held without bond.  It also requires students and teachers to take active shooter preparedness training. <\/p>\n<p>Democrat Rep.
