Photo by Michele Eve Sandberg\/micheleevephoto<\/a><\/p>\n On Saturday morning, as widespread protests against a federal immigration crackdown continued across Minneapolis following the fatal shooting of mother Renee Good by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent, federal agents killed another U.S. citizen.<\/p>\n Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care unit (ICU) nurse at a VA hospital, was shot and killed by a U.S. Border Patrol agent outside a popular donut shop<\/a> in Minneapolis. Videos from the scene show Pretti recording officers with his cell phone before agents pinned him to the ground, hit him, and appeared to pepper spray him. After one of the officers seemingly removes a gun from Pretti\u2019s person, at least one agent is seen shooting Pretti, who appears to be on his knees. More shots ring out as he lies limp on the ground.<\/p>\n While the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said shortly after the shooting<\/a> that Pretti \u201capproached U.S. Border Patrol officers with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun\u201d and \u201cviolently resisted\u201d as officers tried to disarm him, video and eyewitness accounts directly contradict the department\u2019s claims<\/a> about the events. Notably, Pretti also had a permit to carry his weapon.<\/p>\n Pretti\u2019s parents\u00a0issued a statement on Saturday<\/a>, writing that the \u201csickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cAlex was a kindhearted soul who cared deeply for his family and friends and also the American veterans whom he cared for as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital. Alex wanted to make a difference in this world,\u201d his parents, Michael and Susan Pretti, said in a statement. \u201cUnfortunately he will not be with us to see his impact.\u201d<\/p>\n Protests have since erupted across the United States, from Minneapolis to California to New York, in response to Pretti\u2019s killing.
