The first Florida Dungeon Fest conjured a magical moment for the Orlando music scene. Presented by local promoter Spark Booking Collective and Texas label Engraven Records, Florida\u2019s \u201cfirst major dungeon synth event\u201d brought a weekend of wizarding sights \u2019n\u2019 sounds to Conduit and Audubon Park Church last January.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first fest was incredibly successful,\u201d says Zach \u201cZeke\u201d Murphy of Spark Booking. \u201cWe had about a hundred attendees on both days of the festival, an incredible costume contest and great reception all around to the lineup of artists and vendors.\u201d<\/p>\n

Murphy credits his booking partner, Anthony Pandolfino, for guiding the fest to success. In addition to running Engraven, this \u201cabsolute guru in the DS scene\u201d orchestrates Texas Dungeon Siege \u2014 a DIY dungeon synth fest and distro based in Austin \u2014 and performs under the moniker Apoxupon.<\/p>\n

A kindred interest in bringing dungeon synth to the Sunshine State quickly sparked a partnership between the two. They met through local DS act Angmaar, whose sword-wielding performance fittingly christened the church at the first Fest. After winning our 2025 staff pick for Best Medieval Mosh Pit<\/a>, what\u2019s next for FDF?<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile last year\u2019s festival was exclusively centered around dungeon synth and similar synth subgenres, we really wanted to include another genre akin to DS this year,\u201d Murphy says. \u201cParticularly black metal.\u201d And so they did, summoning Orlando\u2019s own Pontifex, Tampa\u2019s Othalan and Vampiric Coffin from Mississippi to raise horns and decibels this weekend. But wait, there\u2019s lore: \u201cLast but not least, we\u2019re mixing it up even further with a fantasy rap set provided by Colorado\u2019s Loremonger.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Making the Fest even more legendary is Saturday\u2019s headliner, Mythstone: a seven-person theatrical performance with puppetry, projections and practical effects. \u201cI\u2019ve booked a lot of stuff in my time,\u201d Murphy tells us. \u201cForeign slam bands, eccentric noise artists, Irish folk duos, and just about every mainstream genre you can name. But a full musical theater performance? Yeah, that\u2019s a first.\u201d<\/p>\n

A DS supergroup of sorts, Mythstone features members from Friday\u2019s headliners, Redhorn Gate of Illinois and Michigan\u2019s Elyvilon, in a collaboration first conceived at last year\u2019s Texas Dungeon Siege. Redhorn Gate\u2019s live performance includes a choreographed actor and the artists in full Dwarven costume and makeup, while Elyvilon brings the Barbarian fantasy to reality in heroic fashion.<\/p>\n

\u201cMythstone is approached as a collaborative world-building project where our talents come together into a sum that is greater than each of the individual parts, with an emphasis on telling a story through music,\u201d says Tristan of Elyvilon, who is \u201cmuch more impressionist in [his] approach to music.\u201d Recalling a \u201cphenomenal\u201d experience at last year\u2019 s Fest, he tells OW he \u201cfound the folks there to be very friendly,\u201d and \u201cmet a lot of great people at that show, some of whom [he] still keep[s] up with regularly,\u201d adding that he\u2019s \u201cexcited to see some familiar faces again this year!\u201d<\/p>\n

The Dungeon festivities begin with gaming sessions inside the Winter Park venue at 2 p.m. each day. \u201cThis year, our side quests come in the form of tabletop games provided by Haven Games and retro console experiences provided by AFK at Conduit for patrons to peruse,\u201d Murphy says. \u201cWe also have a load more vendors slinging trinkets, baubles and doodads to your heart\u2019s content!\u201d<\/p>\n

And for those who dare to enter the Dungeon: \u201cKeep going to shows! Go to weird shows. Go to shows you may not like, for genres you probably haven\u2019t heard of before \u2026 like this one!\u201d<\/p>\n

Florida Dungeon Fest brings two nights of dungeon synth, fantasy and metal to Conduit on Jan. 30 and 31.\u00a0Tickets are still available through Conduit<\/a> but are going fast.<\/p>\n
