So, researchers are working on a way to get ahead of it. FOX 13&#8217;s Briona Arradondo reports.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">GAINESVILLE, Fla. &#8211; As the nation\u2019s third-leading producer of celery, Florida\u2019s celery fields are valuable crops in the winter but susceptible to early blight disease, which can lead to costly losses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">University of Florida researchers are working on a way to get ahead of it.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WTVT\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-2899190a=\"\">What we know:<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">Specialized drones are flying high to fight disease in South Florida\u2019s celery fields.<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/vlcsnap-2026-01-29-22h55m46s761.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-v-0dea8073=\"\"\/>  <\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">&#8220;We can actually teach, \u2018Oh, this is the disease we want you to detect,\u2019&#8221; said Katia Xavier, a plant pathologist with UF\/IFAS Everglades.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">Xavier said they received the drones last week with the support of two grants.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">The drones will take pictures, and they will combine those images with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/tag\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">artificial intelligence<\/a> to develop a model.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/news\/ice-blanket-why-plant-city-farmers-sacrificing-weeks-harvest-save-season\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">READ: Plant City farmers sacrificing this week&#8217;s harvest to save strawberry season &#8211; here&#8217;s why<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">As a plant pathologist with the University of Florida\u2019s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, her team is working to detect the signs of early blight disease, looking at healthy and sick celery crops.<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/vlcsnap-2026-01-29-22h55m55s324.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-v-0dea8073=\"\"\/>  <\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">The work matters for Florida\u2019s economic bottom line, with Florida being the third producer behind California and Michigan.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">&#8220;We are especially important because we produce celery during the winter months when the North States are under snow,&#8221; said Xavier.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WTVT\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-2899190a=\"\">What they&#8217;re saying:<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">UF\/IFAS researchers will follow the crop week by week, as the drones pick up signs that are invisible to the naked eye.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">Traditionally, growers like Thomas Thayer use their eyes to inspect leaves and soil.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">&#8220;When you see that, the symptoms, you&#8217;ve already lost three quarters to two thirds of your roots,&#8221; said Thomas A. Thayer, owner of Southern Citrus Nursery and T2Groves in Polk County.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">Treating that nutrient blockage early saves growers from losing money.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/vlcsnap-2026-01-29-22h55m36s711.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-v-0dea8073=\"\"\/>  <\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">Right now, UF is testing the technology on celery.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">But Thayer, a citrus grower, can see how it will help other crops too.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/news\/florida-citrus-industry-rebounds-new-technology-after-years-decline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">READ: Florida citrus industry rebound with new technology after years of decline<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">&#8220;Like our blueberry fields or our strawberry fields, which, you know, here in central Florida have become a strong part of our industry because of the problems we&#8217;ve had with greening in the citrus industry,&#8221; said Thayer.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">Florida grows about 1,500 acres of celery in the Everglades.
