The calendar is turning from January, and with it comes February and Black History Month, an opportunity to reflect on history, put ideals into action, and celebrate differences and commonalities alike. Black History Month has traditions stretching back decades throughout Tampa Bay, with history museums on either side of the bridge showcasing difficulties, triumphs and growth all side-by-side.<\/p>\n

Every February in the region offers extra opportunities celebrate Black history and culture, and this year is no exception. There is a long list of events, activations and experiences that provide a chance for entertainment and unity in the same moment, in addition to the year-round goal to support Black-owned businesses. The Green Book of Tampa Bay does a fantastic job keeping a running list <\/a>of local places to support.<\/p>\n

As February arrives, here\u2019s a roundup of events across the region to help you celebrate Black History Month. Events are listed in chronological order. <\/p>\n

Civil Rights in the Sunshine City Exhibit
<\/a>All Month \u2013 St. Pete
The St. Petersburg Museum of History will have its powerful Civil Rights exhibit on display throughout the month, a photographic history of the Civil Rights Movement in St. Pete showcasing rare and powerful images that document the city\u2019s fight for justice and equality.<\/p>\n

Black History Month Concert and Afro Opera
<\/a>Sunday, February 1, 4 pm \u2013 St. Pete
St. Pete First United Methodist and Afro Opera are hosting A Message from the Roots, a powerful concert celebrating music by African-American composers and African-American inspired works, featuring Afro Opera founder and soprano Maiya Stevenson.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s Get Lit Poetry Sit-In
<\/a>Friday, February 5, 6:30-7:30 pm \u2013 St. Pete
The monthly literary series at the President Barack Obama Main Library is shining a light on revolutionary Black poets for the month of February. Attendees at the free event are invited to recite their own poetry reflecting Black History Month.<\/p>\n

38th Annual City of Tampa Black History Celebration
<\/a>Friday, February 6, 11 am \u2013 Tampa
Hosted at the Tampa Convention Center, the annual event will feature remarks from Mayor Jane Castor and a keynote address delivered by Tampa Fire Chief and U.S. Navy Veteran, Barbara Tripp. The community event, which is themed around the country\u2019s 250th anniversary and support of the armed forces, is open to the public.<\/p>\n

A Harlem Renaissance Tea Party<\/a>
Saturday, Feb 7, 12-2 pm \u2013 Tampa
Hosted by History With A Twist, this 1920s Harlem-inspired tea party will include exhibits and displays about the Harlem Renaissance and pay homage to key figures of the era, including Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Augusta Savage, Jacob Lawrence, and many others.<\/p>\n

Saturday Shoppes Fresh Start Pre-Super Bowl Market
<\/a>Saturday, February 7, 6-9 pm \u2013 Clearwater
Saturday Shoppes hosts some of the region\u2019s largest gatherings of Black-owned businesses, as the festival experience welcomes chefs, artists, makers, musicians and more. The pre-Super Bowl market is free to attend and family-friendly.<\/p>\n

Black History Trivia Night with The Woodson Museum
<\/a>Monday, February 9, 6-8 pm \u2013 St. Pete
Hosted by The Woodson African American Museum of Florida, this free trivia night at the Enoch D. Davis Center is a night of historical facts and fun, with prizes for winning teams.<\/p>\n

Tampa Bay Collard Green Festival
<\/a>Saturday, February 14 \u2013 St. Pete
The annual festival is one of St. Pete\u2019s most immersive experiences, with thousands gathering every year to celebrate Black culture, history, health equity, and community empowerment. The free and family-friendly festival offers interactive experiences and great local food.<\/p>\n

Center for Manifestation Black History Month Celebration
<\/a>Saturday, February 21, 5-9 pm \u2013 Tampa
The Center for Manifestation is hosting a celebration of Black voices this February as a wide variety of church and community choirs gather together for an evening of song and unity.<\/p>\n

5th Annual Black History Month Reception<\/a>
Friday, February 27, 5 pm \u2013 Tampa
Tampa\u2019s Black History Museum is hosting its annual reception, complete with soul food bites, refreshments, and live cultural performances. The program includes performances by the Dundu Dole Urban African Ballet, spoken word, and musical entertainment. Guest speaker Jai Hinson will address the audience during the program.<\/p>\n

Harlem of the South: Tampa\u2019s Cultural Renaissance
<\/a>Saturday, February 28, 7-10 pm \u2013 Tampa
