{"id":137840,"date":"2026-01-30T17:15:06","date_gmt":"2026-01-30T17:15:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/137840\/"},"modified":"2026-01-30T17:15:06","modified_gmt":"2026-01-30T17:15:06","slug":"st-pete-asks-residents-to-weigh-in-on-future-seawall-and-shoreline-improvements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/137840\/","title":{"rendered":"St. Pete asks residents to weigh in on future seawall and shoreline improvements"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">After several years of planning, the City of St. Pete is now entering the public outreach phase of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stpete.org\/residents\/current_projects\/seawall_master_plan.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Citywide Seawall Master Plan<\/a>, a long-term effort focused on addressing coastal flooding, erosion, and shoreline resilience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The Seawall Master Plan is designed to evaluate the condition of City-owned seawalls and create a strategy for future repairs, replacements, and shoreline improvements. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">A seawall is a hardened shoreline structure, typically constructed of concrete or steel, designed to protect land from erosion, storm surge, and tidal flooding. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">In St. Pete, seawalls protect neighborhoods, parks, roadways, utilities, and other critical infrastructure from rising water levels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Pinellas County has nearly 588 miles of coastline, almost half of which is hardened with seawalls. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Within St. Petersburg alone, there are roughly 80,000 linear feet, or about 15 miles, of City-owned seawalls, in addition to an estimated 500,000 linear feet of privately owned seawalls. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">While the current study focuses on municipal infrastructure, City officials have noted that the findings could help inform broader shoreline policy and private investment decisions in the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The planning effort is being funded largely through a $900,000 Community Development Block Grant\u2013Mitigation award, a federal program intended to help communities reduce disaster risks before future storm events occur. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">After securing the federal funding in 2022, the City issued a Request for Qualifications seeking an  engineering and planning team with coastal resilience expertise. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"After several years of planning, the City of St. Pete is now entering the public outreach phase of&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":137841,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[13],"tags":[202,204,203,199,201,200],"class_list":{"0":"post-137840","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-st-petersburg","8":"tag-st-pete","9":"tag-st-pete-headlines","10":"tag-st-pete-news","11":"tag-st-petersburg","12":"tag-st-petersburg-headlines","13":"tag-st-petersburg-news"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/137840","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=137840"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/137840\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/137841"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=137840"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=137840"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=137840"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
