This January has been one of the coldest in decades in Tallahassee<\/a>, with multiple rounds of freezing weather, including 10 nights where temperatures fell below 32\u00b0F in the area, according to the National Weather Service.<\/p>\n

Prolonged cold increases the amount of energy used to heat homes, which will result in higher-than-normal utility bills.<\/p>\n

To help ease the financial burden this increased utility usage may bring to some customers, the City of Tallahassee is launching the Weather Relief Assistance Program<\/a> (WRAP), it announced in a press release Jan. 30.<\/p>\n

Eligible residential electric, water or natural gas customers may choose one peak winter utility bill and spread that balance evenly over the next four utility bills, when usage is typically lower.<\/p>\n

WRAP applies to bill statements issued between Jan. 1 and Feb. 28, 2026, and is limited to one WRAP deferment per account. The deferred balance will show on a customer’s utility bill as a payment plan, with the amount divided into four monthly payments. Heating and cooling systems (HVAC) are typically the largest energy draws for a home and can account for roughly half of the annual energy consumption. The City offers a variety of grants, loans and rebates to help customers enhance energy conservation and efficiency and lower utility bills.<\/p>\n
