TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Four people have died this winter from cold weather, according to the leader of Tallahassee\u2019s largest homeless shelter. <\/p>\n
Sonya Wilson with the Kearney Center said one of the center\u2019s past clients died just last night from the cold.<\/p>\n
With even colder temperatures expected this weekend, Wilson is worried about what\u2019s to come. <\/p>\n
Wilson said four homeless people have died this winter from the cold, including in one case where she was asked to identify the body. <\/p>\n
\u201cNo matter your age or your health, it is imperative that you seek shelter,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cThese cold temperatures can be deadly, and have been, and we\u2019ve not seen our coldest temperatures yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Kearney Center is already sheltering 100 more people than normal. <\/p>\n
The center is changing its operations for the cold snap and is not requiring residents to leave and come back for another round of intake.<\/p>\n
Wilson is pleading for people to start checking in now. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe have a safe shelter here, we\u2019ve got warm food, we\u2019ve got showers, and we have beefed up services over the weekend,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Leon County EMS has seen an increase in cold-weather-related injuries, but it\u2019s still a small percentage. Of the 4,000 calls for service this month, seven relate to the cold.<\/p>\n
\u201cLast year, there were zero in January,\u201d EMS Chief Chad Abrams said. \u201cSo, certainly that\u2019s an uptick, but it is still seven out of 4,600 total incidents.<\/p>\n
