Jacksonville police<\/a> say both a store clerk and a suspect<\/a> were hospitalized with critical injuries following a double shooting at an Lakeshore shopping center.<\/p>\n

The clerk \u2014 a man in his early 20s \u2014 was shot in the chest about 12:45 p.m. Jan. 31 while trying to stop someone from stealing at one of the businesses in the 4500 block of Shirley Avenue, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The clerk was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries by Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department first responders.<\/p>\n

A short time later, a man \u2014 also in his early 20s \u2014 with a critical gunshot wound to the abdomen arrived at the hospital in a private vehicle, the Sheriff’s Office said. No names were released.<\/p>\n

A clerk and a suspect were both critically wounded in a shootout at a business on Shirley Avenue on Jan. 31, 2026, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.<\/p>\n

“We currently have several people detained in relation to this incident,” the Sheriff’s Office said.<\/p>\n

Preliminary investigation shows that as the clerk was trying to prevent a person from stealing, he “was confronted by a second suspect who began shooting at him,” the Sheriff’s Office said.<\/p>\n

Sheriff’s Office Robbery and Violent Crimes Unit detectives were also interviewing witnesses and canvassing the area for security video and possible additional witnesses.<\/p>\n
