{"id":139931,"date":"2026-02-01T20:21:25","date_gmt":"2026-02-01T20:21:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/139931\/"},"modified":"2026-02-01T20:21:25","modified_gmt":"2026-02-01T20:21:25","slug":"deputy-killed-after-being-struck-by-car-during-funeral-procession","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/139931\/","title":{"rendered":"Deputy killed after being struck by car during funeral procession"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">NEW ORLEANS (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox8live.com\/2026\/01\/30\/airline-highway-new-orleans-closed-both-directions-due-fatal-crash-police-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.fox8live.com\/2026\/01\/30\/airline-highway-new-orleans-closed-both-directions-due-fatal-crash-police-say\/\">WVUE<\/a>\/Gray News) &#8211; New Orleans police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred Friday morning during a funeral procession.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The victim was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/JeffParishSO\/posts\/pfbid0tdVA6VCQ8hfKCHmGbbjzzCXeipCykXn1FVVRvcv71jRtSk7SY3PVvXTuMZsPzzxHl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/JeffParishSO\/posts\/pfbid0tdVA6VCQ8hfKCHmGbbjzzCXeipCykXn1FVVRvcv71jRtSk7SY3PVvXTuMZsPzzxHl\">identified<\/a> as 41-year-old Christopher Paul Ohlmeyer, of River Ridge. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Ohlmeyer was a Jefferson Parish Sheriff\u2019s Office deputy. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick said the deputy was killed in a motorcycle crash on Airline Highway while escorting a funeral procession.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Ohlmeyer was pronounced dead at the scene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">A captain with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff\u2019s Office said the deputy was a 16-year law enforcement veteran. That included 14 years with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff\u2019s Office. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Ohlmeyer was married and had two children. His family has been notified of the fatal accident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The driver of the other vehicle, described as a sedan, was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities did not release information about that person\u2019s condition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Officials said the funeral procession escort was an off-duty assignment that officers volunteer for.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"figure-img img-fluid mx-auto d-block\" alt=\"Fatal crash on Airline Highway in New Orleans\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/VJL5R47V7FFPJCW3E44B65X7AA.jpg\" width=\"980\" height=\"551\" \/>Fatal crash on Airline Highway in New Orleans(FOX 8)<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Because the crash occurred in the city, the New Orleans Police department is leading the investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Authorities said traffic investigators are collecting video, analytical data and other evidence, including drone footage and vehicle data, to reconstruct the crash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Kirkpatrick described the incident as a difficult day for both law enforcement agencies and said they would work together to support the deputy\u2019s family and honor his memory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cLaw enforcement is a close-knit profession, and we stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners at JPSO. When one of our own is hurting, we all hurt.
