Nelson Castellano<\/a> did not open the evening by talking about leadership.<\/p>\n

He talked about work.<\/p>\n

When Castellano took the stage for January\u2019s CEO Connect<\/a>, the room looked like Tampa right now. <\/p>\n

Exotic cars lined the space. Business leaders filled the seats. The setting suggested momentum. The conversation stayed grounded.<\/p>\n

Castellano<\/a>, managing shareholder at Trenam, spent the evening tracing a leadership philosophy shaped less by ambition than by repetition, responsibility and long-term relationships.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was always working,\u201d he said. \u201cYou were either in school or you were doing something productive. That was my dad\u2019s mindset.\u201d<\/p>\n

That mindset became foundational.<\/p>\n

Castellano\u2019s walk-up music underscored the same idea. As The Rolling Stones\u2019 \u201cYou Can\u2019t Always Get What You Want\u201d played, he later explained the song had become a refrain in his household when his children were growing up. <\/p>\n

It was a reminder that effort matters and outcomes are not guaranteed. Over time, that refrain followed him into his professional life.<\/p>\n

One firm, one career<\/p>\n

Castellano has spent his entire legal career at Trenam. During the fireside chat, he described the decision plainly. <\/p>\n

Staying required patience and commitment. It also meant accepting periods of uncertainty.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were moments where I asked myself if this was the right place,\u201d he said. \u201cEvery time I came back to the same conclusion. It was.\u201d<\/p>\n

Longevity created trust inside the firm. It also shaped his ability to lead.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do not think I could have taken on the managing shareholder role without having spent my whole career here,\u201d Castellano said. \u201cPeople know me. They know how I work.\u201d<\/p>\n

That familiarity carried expectations. Leadership did not arrive automatically. It was earned over time.<\/p>\n

Castellano acknowledged that longevity also brings risk. Complacency, he said, is something leaders have to actively fight. \u201cIt is the beast you keep battling,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Relationships as responsibility<\/p>\n

Castellano described Tampa as a relationship town. In his view, relationships carry obligation as much as opportunity.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople care about who you are and how you treat them,\u201d he said. \u201cA lot of my clients became friends.\u201d<\/p>\n

He acknowledged that closeness requires care. Reputation travels quickly in a market where professional and personal circles overlap. Castellano emphasized the importance of doing work carefully and owning mistakes when they occur.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have to be willing to say we missed something or we need to fix it,\u201d he said. \u201cIf you make a mistake, it can be very costly for the client.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mentorship played a significant role in shaping that perspective. Castellano credited his partners and colleagues for challenging him and demonstrating that strong outcomes can come from different approaches.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey might handle something differently than I would,\u201d he said. \u201cThey still get excellent results.\u201d<\/p>\n

That understanding informed how he built teams and how he learned to lead people with different styles.<\/p>\n

Leadership learned over time<\/p>\n

Castellano framed leadership as something learned through experience rather than instinct. Early in his career, he believed hard work alone would carry him forward. <\/p>\n

Over time, he learned that effort needed to be paired with perspective.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou come out of law school thinking you need to be right all the time,\u201d he said. \u201cLife teaches you that being right is not always the point.\u201d<\/p>\n

Family influenced that evolution. Castellano spoke openly about learning from his wife and later from his children.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy kids are very comfortable telling me I am wrong,\u201d he said. \u201cThat teaches you a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n

Loss also reshaped how he thinks about leadership. In recent years, Castellano lost his father. His wife lost both of her parents. A close friend and partner passed unexpectedly. Those experiences shifted how he measures success.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt some point you stop measuring life by the size of your practice,\u201d he said. \u201cYou start thinking about whether people are supported.\u201d<\/p>\n

That perspective now informs how he leads the firm.<\/p>\n

When others spoke about his career during the event, Castellano admitted the praise made him uncomfortable. He described it as part of the job rather than the goal.<\/p>\n

Succession as ongoing work<\/p>\n

Succession emerged as a central theme during the conversation. Castellano expressed confidence in the next generation of leaders at Trenam while acknowledging the responsibility that comes with transition.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have young partners who are engaged and excited,\u201d he said. \u201cThat energy matters.\u201d<\/p>\n

He emphasized that succession is not a single moment. It is a continuous process that tests culture more than strategy.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have to make room and trust people to lead in their own way,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The firm has expanded leadership roles and practice groups to support that transition. Castellano said learning to step back was part of the work.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou cannot do everything one way,\u201d he said. \u201cThat took time for me to understand.\u201d<\/p>\n

A city still defining itself<\/p>\n

Castellano\u2019s career has unfolded alongside Tampa\u2019s growth. He has watched the city evolve from a quieter professional market into a region attracting national attention.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook around,\u201d he said during the event. \u201cYou see how far Tampa has come.\u201d<\/p>\n

He serves on boards including ZooTampa and Junior Achievement of Tampa Bay. He views that involvement as stewardship rather than recognition.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese organizations shape what comes next,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Growth brings opportunity and pressure. Castellano believes Tampa\u2019s strength lies in maintaining its character while continuing to develop.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe challenge is preserving what works as the city grows,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Looking ahead<\/p>\n

Castellano plans to continue practicing law<\/a>. He expects to travel more to visit his children in Chicago and San Francisco. He remains focused on growing Trenam\u2019s Sarasota office and supporting leadership development across the firm.<\/p>\n

\u201cI enjoy the work,\u201d he said. \u201cI am not looking to step away from it.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked how he hopes to be remembered, his answer was measured.<\/p>\n

\u201cA good lawyer who worked hard,\u201d he said. \u201cA thoughtful and fair person.\u201d<\/p>\n

That answer reflected the leadership philosophy that guided the evening. It was built on continuity, responsibility and trust rather than spectacle.<\/p>\n
