TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WBRC<\/a>) – Florida State offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn announced Monday he is retiring from coaching after 35 years.<\/p>\n

The former head coach said it\u2019s time for him to step away from coaching after serving as the Seminoles\u2019 OC for one season.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am excited to spend more time with my family and focus on the next chapter of my life,\u201d Malzahn said. \u201cI want to thank Coach Norvell for giving me the opportunity to coach at such a prestigious program.\u201d<\/p>\n

Malzahn, an Arkansas-native, began his college coaching career as the offensive coordinator at the University of Arkansas in 2006. His was first hired as a head coach in 2012 at Arkansas State.<\/p>\n

After one season in Jonesboro, Malzahn returned to Auburn to replace Gene Chizik.<\/p>\n

Malzahn, after being the Tigers\u2019 offensive coordinator during their 2010 National Championship run, led Auburn to a 68-35 record, including a loss to Florida State in the 2012 National Championship Game.<\/p>\n

Malzahn was fired from Auburn during the 2020 season before taking over the Central Florida program for four seasons.<\/p>\n

Co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Tim Harris is being promoted to fill the OC role in Tallahassee.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to thank Coach Malzahn for his effort and dedication to our program over the last 14 months,\u201d Norvell said. \u201cHe did a wonderful job coordinating our offense and calling plays in 2025, and he has set a strong foundation for us to continue building on in 2026 behind the coordination of Tim Harris and the multiple other assistant coaches who are returning. Coach Harris has a complete understanding of the offensive scheme, and his ability to effectively share that knowledge with his players will continue to be a benefit for our offense.\u201d<\/p>\n
