Derek and Momma Cat at Broward County Animal Care. {BCAC}<\/p>\n

Broward County Animal Care is spotlighting two pets in need of homes this week, encouraging residents to consider adoption and give these animals a chance at a more comfortable life outside the shelter.\n<\/p>\n

Derek (A24478117) is a 2-year-old neutered male Rottweiler mix weighing 52 pounds. He arrived at the shelter in September with his brother after the pair was found to be underweight and nervous strays. Derek\u2019s brother was adopted quickly, leaving Derek to adjust on his own.\n<\/p>\n

Staff members report that Derek initially gained confidence through interactions with shelter workers and participation in play groups. However, his extended stay in the busy shelter environment has made him increasingly fearful. He now spends much of his time retreating from visitors and appears anxious both indoors and outdoors.<\/p>\n

Shelter staff hope a patient adopter can provide Derek with the calm environment he needs to rebuild confidence and thrive in a home setting.\n<\/p>\n

Also seeking placement is Momma Cat (A2430786), a 3-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair weighing about eight pounds. She arrived more than six months ago following a large-scale animal confiscation and is currently classified as a working cat due to her prior living conditions.\n<\/p>\n

Though initially wary of people, Momma Cat has shown progress through clicker training and positive reinforcement. She now tolerates gentle petting in exchange for treats and enjoys spending time with other cats. Staff believe she could become a loving house cat with continued patience, but she may also be well-suited for nontraditional placements such as barns, warehouses, or shops where she can provide natural pest control.\n<\/p>\n

Residents can meet Derek, Momma Cat, and other adoptable animals at Broward County Animal Care, 2400 SW 42nd St. in Fort Lauderdale. The shelter is open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. for adoptions.<\/p>\n

All pets adopted from the shelter are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. Adopters pay only a $25 Broward County registration tag fee.\n<\/p>\n
