SFSO will present the anticipated Florida premiere of GRAMMY\u00ae\u00a0nominee\u00a0Nathalie Joachim\u2019s\u00a0Had to Be,\u00a0an intimate exploration of memory and identity, performed by\u00a0rising\u00a0cellist\u00a0Seth Parker Woods\u00a0and the orchestral premiere of\u00a0Carlos Simon\u2019s\u00a0Four Black American Dances,\u00a0a vibrant work\u00a0filled\u00a0with\u00a0spiritual depth. Completing the program,\u00a0Mozart\u2019s\u00a0\u201cHaffner\u201d\u00a0symphony bursts with celebratory energy and elegant precision,\u00a0while\u00a0Rimsky-Korsakov\u2019s\u00a0crowd-pleasing\u00a0Capriccio espagnol\u00a0sparkles\u00a0with irresistible Spanish rhythms\u00a0at 7:30 p.m.\u00a0onWednesday,\u00a0February 18, at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale\u00a0(707 NE 8th\u00a0Street). Enjoy a pre-concert chat with Dr. Alan Mason, professor emeritus of music at Barry University, 30 minutes before the concert, featuring in-depth conversation and insights about the works and composers.<\/p>\n<p>Haitian American composer Nathalie Joachim\u2019s\u00a0Had To Be\u00a0draws on Black Dandyism &#8211; a cultural movement blending European and Black American male fashion to convey style, status, and identity &#8211; as well as broader African diasporic influences, including Caribbean musical traditions and New Orleans second line celebrations. The three-movement concerto was written for three-time GRAMMY-nominated cellist Seth Parker Woods, described by\u00a0The Guardian\u00a0as \u201ca cellist of power and grace\u201d with \u201cmature artistry and willingness to go to the brink.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Had to Be\u00a0is positive, prideful, and radical all at once. It represents the perpetually colorful and complex intersections between race, class, gender, power, and style. It honors what it means to be Black and continuously choosing to be free. By coincidence, or perhaps to no surprise, Woods has topped the Best Dressed Lists in\u00a0Variety,\u00a0Texas Monthly, and\u00a0OC Register.<\/p>\n<p>Cellist Seth Parker Woods is a versatile artist and advocate for contemporary music, having premiered numerous concertos written for him, including works by Tyshawn Sorey, Julia Adolphe, and Rebecca Saunders, in addition to Nathalie Joachim\u2019s\u00a0Had To Be. His GRAMMY-nominated, autobiographical work\u00a0Difficult Grace\u00a0has been performed to critical acclaim at major venues including 92NY, CAP UCLA, and the San Diego Symphony. Woods has appeared at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and Konzerthaus Dortmund, among others. Since 2022, he has served on the faculty of USC Thornton School of Music and was appointed Robert Mann Chair in Strings and Chamber Music in 2024. He has also held residencies with the Kaufman Music Center and Seattle Symphony and received the 2022 Chamber Music America Michael Jaffee Visionary Award.<\/p>\n<p>SFSO is also proud to present its orchestral premiere of\u00a0Four Black American Dances\u00a0from GRAMMY-nominated African American composer,\u00a0Carlos Simon, the composer-in-residence for the John F. Kennedy Center.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Adding to the varied program, SFSO will perform\u00a0Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart\u2019s\u00a0Symphony No. 35 \u201cHaffner,\u201d a four-movement vibrant, celebratory symphony written in 1782, to honor Mozart\u2019s friend, Sigmund Haffner, and his rise to nobility in Salzberg.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Concluding the evening is the crowd-pleasing\u00a0Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov\u2019s\u00a0Capriccio espagnol,\u00a0based on Spanish folk songs and dances, and filled with vibrant rhythms that whisk audiences off to exotic, far-off places of the imagination.<\/p>\n<p>SFSO\u2019s 28th\u00a0season of \u201cJuxtapositions\u201d explores beauty in contrasts, where the bold and the sublime intersect, and timeless masterpieces share the stage with today\u2019s most compelling and celebrated musical voices.
