WPTV listened to many neighbors in Palm City who lost power during this winter weather.<\/p>\n
WPTV\u2019s Tyler Hatfield found out from Florida Power & Light (FPL) that the cold weather could put a strain on equipment, causing many of these outages.<\/p>\n

A chorus of generators could be heard in the Cypress Lake Neighborhood. <\/p>\n
\u201cYou can’t run heat if you don\u2019t have power,\u201d said neighbor Brenda Brostek.<\/p>\n
Brostek\u2019s power went out Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy next-door neighbor, her mother was in hospice,\u201d said Brostek. \u201cIt kinda made it hard for her. She had to call hospice to take her to the hospice house.” <\/p>\n
Teri Reed and her husband\u2019s power went out too.<\/p>\n
\u201cReminds me of how I don\u2019t like camping,\u201d said Reed\u2019s husband.<\/p>\n
But they said they\u2019re prepared.<\/p>\n

Thousands lose power as cold strains FPL grid<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have coolers, went to Publix last night to get some ice. They thought I was crazy, \u2018Why are you getting ice when it\u2019s so cold,\u2019\u201d said Reed.<\/p>\n
Martin County is still dealing with hundreds of outages. As of 4 p.m. Monday, roughly 636 residents were still without power. <\/p>\n
FPL said some heating systems can use two to three times more electricity than air conditioning, which can cause problems.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were under three blankets last night,\u201d said Linda Pick, who lives with her husband Robert in the Westwood Country Estates neighborhood.<\/p>\n
Their outage is familiar, as they\u2019ve dealt with transformer issues for years.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt’s been a problem for the past 10, 15, years,\u201d said Pick. \u201cWe had cold hot dogs and beans and cold buns because we didn’t have power.\u201d<\/p>\n
Their neighbor Carol Albright also lost power.<\/p>\n
\u201cI lived in turtleneck, sweatshirt, winter coat, gloves, socks, slippers, the whole nine yards and a blanket,\u201d said Albright.<\/p>\n
Crews restored their power and Albright said FPL told her they will be replacing the transformer.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve got it cranked up,\u201d said Albright. \u201cSo should it go out, at least my house is little warmer.\u201d<\/p>\n
FPL said they have crews actively working on the Treasure Coast and in Palm Beach County to get the power back on.<\/p>\n
