Yesterday, for some reason, Laura Loomer<\/a> jumped off her Islamophobia train to provide her two cents about the November 4 City of Miami mayoral election<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Florida\u2019s very own far-right provocateur, self-described proud Islamophobe, and once-rumored Donald Trump side piece<\/a>, took a brief break from attacking the Muslim community on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, to deem Miami City Commissioner Joe Carollo \u2014 who is running to reclaim the mayoral gavel he wielded in 1996-97 and again from 1998 till 2001\u2014 \u201cwoke,\u201d and not a true Republican.<\/p>\n

Loomer, who appears to be an avid New Times reader, referenced an August story about Carollo\u2019s monthly event in Little Havana<\/a> featuring performances by a local Cuban drag queen. She included a screenshot of New Times\u2019 Facebook post <\/a>about the story along with a quote from Carollo noting that the performers \u201care not transvestites.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also pointed out that Carollo\u2019s District 3 staff was recently caught on video taking down campaign signs<\/a> that touted rival mayoral candidate Emilio Gonz\u00e1lez.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very important that Miami, Florida, remains RED and that a strong, America First, pro-Trump candidate becomes mayor of Miami, that\u2019s the city where President Trump\u2019s Presidential library is being built,\u201d Loomer wrote in her Monday, October 20, tweet. \u201cWe cannot allow Miami to become a cesspool of WOKE degeneracy.<\/p>\n

Joe Carollo Has Been Called Many Things, But \u201cWoke\u201d Wasn\u2019t One of Them<\/p>\n

Surprisingly, given Loomer\u2019s tendency to be chronically online, she is seemingly unaware that \u201cwoke\u201d is not a word that\u2019s likely to come to mind when describing Joe Carollo.<\/p>\n

This is the man who claimed his then-fellow Commissioner Ken Russell, the city\u2019s first Asian-American commissioner and now another opponent in the 2025 mayor\u2019s race, bore a resemblance to North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been meaning to say, but I wanted to wait until the end,\u201d Carollo said toward the close of the proceedings of a 2018 commission meeting. \u201cThe more I look at you, I\u2019m becoming fond of that Kim Jong-un new look you\u2019ve got.\u201d<\/p>\n

And as referenced above, Carollo still uses the outdated term \u201ctransvestites,\u201d which many find offensive, and routinely jabs at filmmaker and fierce Carollo critic Billy Corben\u2019s Jewish heritage by invoking his legal name, calling him \u201clittle Billy Cohen.\u201d <\/a>The Miami-born documentarian, who adopted the surname Corben in response to anti-Semitism while working as a child actor, says Carollo references his legal name as an anti-Semitic dog whistle. (Carollo also once compared a Black city manager to former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

That\u2019s not very woke of Joe.<\/p>\n

Still, Loomer managed to convince her X crowd that Carollo wasn\u2019t sufficiently MAGA for Miami.<\/p>\n

\u201cMiami deserves better than corruption and drag shows for Kids,\u201d one user responded. \u201cFlorida must stay RED and AMERICA FIRST.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cKeep Miami RED and fight these corrupt tactics,\u201d another added. <\/p>\n

Yet another chimed in, \u201cDrag Show Joe @JoeCarolloNow is the Joe Biden of Miami Politics.\u201d<\/p>\n
