Digable Planets<\/a>\u2018 mainstream success stopped on the Grammys stage. Collecting two awards in the 1994 ceremony, the emcee trio from Philly\u2014Ishmael \u201cButterfly\u201d Butler, Craig \u201cDoodlebug\u201d Irving, and Mary Ann \u201cLadybug Mecca\u201d Vieira\u2014used their speeches<\/a> to call out hypocrisy in the music industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019d like everybody to think about the people right outside this door that\u2019s homeless,\u201d Butler told the crowd. \u201cAs you sit in these $900 seats \u2026 they out there not eating at all. Also, we\u2019d like to say to the universal Black family that one day we\u2019re gonna recognize our true enemy. We\u2019re gonna stop attacking each other, and maybe then we\u2019ll get some changes going on.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Planets\u2019 sophomore album, Blowout Comb, carried the same tone, spreading antifascist messages to stand up for Black Americans. Unsurprisingly, it got virtually no label support and was considered a commercial flop, leading to the group\u2019s breakup. Somewhere along the way, its message and complex production made Blowout Comb a cult classic. Thirty years later, the group is back together, and St. Pete is part of an extended anniversary tour.<\/p>\n
