(WCTV\/Gray Florida Capital Bureau) &#8211; House and Senate versions of the \u201cCreating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair Act\u201d or CROWN Act were filed on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The legislation would ban discrimination based on hair texture and protective styles like braids, twists, and locs. The measure would apply to any school receiving state money.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\">A 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrownact.com\/research-studies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thecrownact.com\/research-studies\">CROWN Coalition<\/a> study found that more than 20 percent of black women have been sent home because of their hair.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cOur children should be able to focus on learning in school, not worry about being punished for how they wear their natural hair. I\u2019ve heard troubling stories of students being told they couldn\u2019t walk at graduation or participate in sports unless they cut or concealed their hair. This bill puts an end to that kind of discrimination and ensures every student is treated with dignity and respect,\u201d said House Minority Leader Fentrice Driskell.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">There are 25 other states with similar laws in place, including Texas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright |\">Copyright 2025 WCTV.
