Charles\/FAMUAN)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0Jan.\u00a031, over 400 locals, activists and college students alike rallied at the Florida State Capitol to demand \u201cICE out of Tallahassee,\u201d bundling in coats and scarves as wind chills dipped into the 20s during one of Florida\u2019s coldest snaps in years.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0protest\u00a0comes after\u00a0the death of\u00a0Alex\u00a0Pretti,\u00a0who\u00a0was shot and killed during an\u00a0interaction\u00a0with\u00a0Immigration Customs Enforcement officers\u00a0in Minneapolis.\u00a0\u00a0His death,\u00a0along with the deaths of\u00a0Renee Nicole Good and\u00a0Keith Porter\u00a0Jr., have\u00a0ignited the flames of protest across the nation after a medical examiner ruled\u00a0Pretti\u2019s death a\u00a0homicide. As political unrest, confusion,\u00a0frustration\u00a0and fear continue to spread across the country,\u00a0residents of Tallahassee rallied to address the issue independently.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"936\" height=\"624\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1770339488_594_image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55060\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Protesters listening\u00a0to Justin Jordan,\u00a0president of FAMU SDS. (Jonathan R. M. Charles\/FAMUAN)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For\u00a0the\u00a0organizers\u00a0of\u00a0the Capitol rally, the protest was as much about local policy as national outrage. Tallahassee\u2019s cooperation with federal immigration enforcement became a flashpoint in 2025, when the city manager and the Tallahassee Police Department signed a 287(g) agreement with ICE, allowing local officers to perform specific immigration duties under ICE supervision.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cWe are pushing for our city to reverse the agreement that allows ICE to collaborate here,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0Delilah Pierre,\u00a0president of the Tallahassee Emergency Action Coalition.\u00a0\u201cWe want a public hearing about the agreement.\u00a0We\u2019re\u00a0also fighting for someone who was kidnapped by ICE in our city and needs to be released\u00a0immediately. We want legalization for all immigrants we want all immigrants, undocumented and documented, to have full rights.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Different student groups from nearby campuses are centering their demands on the complete removal of university-level cooperation with ICE.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re pushing for FSU to drop their 287(g) agreement with the police department,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0Kaiden Rosa, vice president of Students for a Democratic Society at Florida State University. \u201cWe\u2019re also pushing for FSU to have a town hall on our campus, led by us and other identity-based organizations, where we can speak about the racism we face on campus and, of course, the issue with ICE as well.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rosa explained that 287(g) \u201cis the agreement that any police department can make with ICE that basically turns their police into ICE agents as well.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"936\" height=\"624\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1770339488_95_image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55059\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Protesters\u00a0line\u00a0the\u00a0lawn of the state capital.\u00a0(Jonathan R. Charles\/FAMUAN)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The deaths of Pretti,\u00a0Good and Porter loomed over the crowd\u2019s chants and signs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we look at the countless murders,\u00a0ICE has done, even before these people whose lives, of course, matter,\u201d Rosa said.\u00a0\u201cWe\u00a0just see that people are ready to fight now.\u00a0They\u00a0represent\u00a0the movement against ICE.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0the time to fight, the students are going to fight, the community is going to fight, and we\u00a0have to\u00a0come together to defeat 287(g) all over.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pierre put it in more direct political terms,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that Alex Pretti, Rene\u00e9 Good, and Keith Porter show how bankrupt and depraved the Trump administration are,\u201d\u00a0she said.\u00a0\u201cThey\u2019re\u00a0an example of\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0going to happen to the rest of us if we allow our democratic rights to keep being stripped away.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Speakers also stressed that ICE\u2019s impact is already being felt in Tallahassee,\u00a0thousands of\u00a0miles\u00a0away\u00a0from the streets of Minneapolis, where Pretti was killed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust this past summer in Tallahassee, over 100 workers were abducted by ICE while doing their construction jobs,\u201d Rosa said. \u201cThese\u00a0are people who are\u00a0just trying to provide for their families and contribute to this country.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0absolutely disgusting.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For some students, the city\u2019s decision to deepen cooperation with ICE through 287(g) feels like a direct attack on campus safety.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s honestly very disheartening, but not surprising that Tallahassee accepted the money,\u201d\u00a0Florida A&amp;M University\u00a0student Paris Billings\u00a0said.\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m\u00a0mainly concerned\u00a0about how these immigration efforts could affect students.
