JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2013 For Gary Thomas, Jacksonville\u2019s annual Martin Luther King Jr. parade isn\u2019t just a procession through downtown streets \u2014 it\u2019s a \u201cFreedom Walk\u201d that has defined nearly half a century of his life.<\/p>\n

Thomas, co-founder of Jacksonville\u2019s MLK Foundation, has helped organize the parade for 45 years, transforming it into one of the city\u2019s most significant civil rights commemorations.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not just for Dr. King,\u201d Thomas explained. \u201cIt\u2019s for all of the people, black, white, whatever, that have been involved in the struggle for human rights in this country, to make this republic a real democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s parade marked its largest turnout yet, featuring nine marching bands \u2014 the most in its history \u2014 alongside cheer teams, JROTC units, clubs, associations, law enforcement, and corporate participants.<\/p>\n

For Thomas, each step of the Freedom Walk carries deeper meaning. \u201cWe walk in the shadow of Dr. King, Medgar Evers, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks,\u201d he said. \u201cThat, more than anything, should be the spirit of our parade.\u201d<\/p>\n

He emphasized that the celebration extends beyond Dr. King\u2019s individual contributions. \u201cWe feel like it\u2019s the entire movement that we celebrate,\u201d Thomas said. \u201cThere were a lot of other people, too, that have vanished into obscurity that made sacrifices as significant as those that Dr. King made.\u201d<\/p>\n

The MLK Foundation\u2019s reach goes far beyond the annual parade. Under Thomas\u2019s leadership, the organization maintains a year-round presence in Jacksonville through memorial services, scholarship programs, food drives and educational trips.<\/p>\n

Thomas remains committed to keeping the parade community-driven, refusing to let it become commercialized. This dedication to preserving its authentic purpose has helped maintain the event\u2019s significance as both a celebration and a reminder of ongoing civil rights work.<\/p>\n

While Thomas acknowledged that the time to pass the torch will eventually come, his vision for the Freedom Walk remains clear: he hopes the seeds planted along this route will continue to grow for the next 45 years and beyond.<\/p>\n
