Tampa International Airport<\/a> has approved the final design for Airside D, marking a major milestone for the region\u2019s primary aviation hub, and setting the stage for the first new airside terminal at TPA in almost two decades.<\/p>\n

The Hillsborough County Aviation Authority Board of Directors approved the design this week, unlocking full funding and allowing the project to move into vertical construction later this year. The terminal is expected to be completed in late 2028, with a public opening planned for 2029.<\/p>\n

At approximately 600,000 square feet, Airside D will be the largest airside terminal in the airport\u2019s history. The building will feature 16 gates capable of serving both domestic and international flights and is a central component of TPA\u2019s strategy to accommodate long-term growth. Airport officials project annual passenger traffic could rise from roughly 25 million today to 35 million by 2037.<\/p>\n

Airport leadership positioned Airside D as both a capacity expansion and a rethinking of the passenger experience. The final design reflects extensive community and stakeholder input, with an emphasis on comfort, accessibility and ease of movement.<\/p>\n

Passenger-focused amenities include plentiful power outlets, extensive natural light and indoor greenery, a children\u2019s play area and a dedicated quiet room designed for sensory relief. These elements were added or refined following public feedback sessions held during the design process.<\/p>\n

From an operational standpoint, the new terminal will include a modern TSA security checkpoint and a ground-level international arrivals facility, streamlining customs processing for inbound travelers. Glass boarding bridges will provide views of the airfield, while a mezzanine level will house a Delta Sky Club and a shared-use lounge. Retail and dining spaces are integrated throughout the concourse and gate areas.<\/p>\n

The total project cost is estimated at $1.528 billion. Alongside the design approval, the aviation authority also authorized a major construction contract to keep the project on schedule.<\/p>\n

Early site and foundation work is already underway. Structural construction is expected to accelerate in the coming months as the project moves from preparation to full build-out.<\/p>\n

Airside D is being designed by a national team of architecture, engineering and construction firms, with a focus on clear sightlines, efficient passenger flow and flexibility to support future airline needs.
