GAINESVILLE, Fla. \u2013 It was yet another banner day for the JU track and field program, following up on last week’s wealth of podium finishes.<\/p>\n
The Dolphins dotted the podiums again Friday afternoon back in Gainesville for the Gainesville Indoor Classic. It didn’t take long for a Dolphin to earn a top spot, as long jumper Julia Sue-Kam-Ling<\/a> earned a third-place finish in the meet’s third event of the day.<\/p>\n Sue-Kam-Ling posted a 5.72m leap in the long jump, just .01 meters behind second place. It was her first top-3 finish of the indoor season thus far.<\/p>\n The jumpers continued to impress as Ma’Kala Davis<\/a> took home the gold in the triple jump with a 12.61m leap. It was her third first-place finish of the season, after earning a pair of firsts at the Legends of Alachua County Invitational.\u00a0<\/p>\n Right behind Davis was Sanaa Geter<\/a> in third place with a 12.07m jump. Geter has already started his sophomore season strong, with a third and second place finish to her name prior to Friday’s meet.\u00a0<\/p>\n Taking to the track, Savannah Chadic<\/a> led the pack with a first-place finish in the 400. Chadic paced the crowd with a time of 54.81. In third was McKayla Francis<\/a>, posting a time of 56.42. Kemaj Moore<\/a> finished just outside, in fifth place, with a time of 56.73.<\/p>\n Just last week, Chadic took home the gold in the 400, while Francis improved upon her previous 400 time by over a full second and Moore posted her season-best time.<\/p>\n In the 60m dash, former Guatemalan Olympian Mariandree Chacon<\/a> finished in 5th\u00a0with a time of 7.58. Chacon wasn’t done however, earning the top overall spot in the 200m dash with a time of 24.17. Chadic finished in third, posting a time of 24.61.<\/p>\n Chacon’s first-place finish was her first of the indoor season.<\/p>\n During the mile run, Madeline Weiler<\/a> posted the best finish by a ‘Phin with her 10th\u00a0place position. Weiler ran a 5:10.74 mile. Jordan Dix<\/a> finished in 12th\u00a0with a time of 5:12.83.\u00a0<\/p>\n The next time the Dolphins take to the track will be in the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship in Louisville, Ky. from Feb. 27-28. Last season, the Dolphins claimed third place as a team at the Indoor Championships, with fomrer ‘Phin Cassie Thompson<\/a> earning MVP.\u00a0<\/p>\n COACH’S COMMENTS
“It was a great weekend for the team,” coach Diego Vela said. “Almost all of them improved their indoor personal bests or set a season best. It was really nice to see that their hard work and dedication paid off. The Dolphins are ready for the Indoor Conference Championship.”
