The team offered him a contract that would’ve made him the highest-paid offensive coordinator in NFL history, but the deal was contingent on Coen not taking a second interview for the Jacksonville Jaguars head coaching job.

Coen initially agreed to the deal, but went behind the Buccaneers’ back to meet with Jaguars brass anyway. He ultimately ghosted Tampa Bay and agreed to become the head coach in Jacksonville, and there were definitely some hard feelings in the process.

Buccaneers have had no contact today with Liam Coen or his representation. The team has made multiple efforts to reach him and has not. Coen is in Jacksonville discussing a deal to become the head coach.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) January 23, 2025

In an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show last offseason, Adam Schefter described the Buccaneers as “irate” about how Coen handled the situation.

“Since the turn of the century, I don’t remember the last time I heard one team this hot and bothered about a coach taking another deal,” Schefter said.

Coen’s betrayal has become one of the most infamous moments in franchise history, and a year later, Coen is still taking shots at the Buccaneers.

Liam Coen’s latest comments felt like a clear shot at the Buccaneers

Nick Wize, who covers Tampa Bay sports on 95.3 WDAE, was live on Radio Row when Coen walked by and was invited to join the show. According to WDAE’s Christopher Mathis, once Coen realized the broadcast was Tampa-based, he rolled his eyes and kept moving.

When Wize later asked Coen to join the show again, Coen declined and responded with, “What happened this year?” — a clear reference to the Buccaneers’ drop-off following his departure.

15-minutes later, Coen walked back by. @iAmNickWize said “coach will you come on with us in Tampa”

Liam said “You’re just like everybody else…”

Nick said “I defended you on the air”

Coen looked and walked away then asked “what happened this year?”

Insinuating TB fell apart👀

— Christopher Mathis 🎙 (@thechrismathis) February 6, 2026

Wize made it clear he has no hard feelings, and that the troll from Coen was all in good fun. But to many Bucs fans, Coen’s petty shot at the Buccaneers isn’t exactly helping him get back in their good graces. Coming from the coach who abruptly left Tampa Bay under such bizarre circumstances, it felt less like playful banter and more like another unnecessary jab.

After all, it’s Coen who spurned the Bucs — not the other way around. Tampa Bay showed how much they valued Coen when they offered him the biggest offensive coordinator contract in history. The organization have a right to be upset with how he handled things, and that shouldn’t warrant him holding a grudge against the team that gave him an opportunity and served as a stepping stone for him landing his first NFL head coaching gig.

Coen’s tension with the Buccaneers doesn’t extend to everyone. He and Baker Mayfield remain on good terms after Mayfield enjoyed a career year under Coen, with Tampa Bay’s offensive success playing a major role in launching Coen’s head coaching career.

Bucs QB Baker Mayfield video bombs Jags HC Liam Coen’s interview at the #NFL Honors event last night, Mayfield hits him with “DUVAAAAL.” 😂#WeAreTheKrewe @953WDAE pic.twitter.com/LexibpGKuI

— Christopher Mathis 🎙 (@thechrismathis) February 6, 2026

The two even shared a playful moment ahead of the NFL Honors ceremony when Mayfield jokingly greeted Coen with a “DUVAL!” chant. Still, that cordial relationship hasn’t carried over to the rest of the Buccaneers ecosystem, as Coen’s recent comments seem to indicate a lingering frustration between him and the organization, media, and fan base.

The two teams won’t meet until 2027, but when they finally do, it won’t feel like just another game. Coen’s exit from Tampa Bay still lingers, and his recent comments only added to the animosity surrounding his departure. When the Buccaneers and Jaguars finally face off for the first time since Coen left, it will be must-see TV to find out whether any of that tension carries over on the field.

Liam Coen didn’t leave the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the best of terms, to put it lightly.
