The design, which features iconic black, green, yellow and red colors, was inspired by Harlem Renaissance artist Aaron Douglas, considered the father of African American art, according to the Lightning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">There were plenty of positive comments <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo?fbid=1446805427115133&amp;set=pcb.1446809153781427\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">on Facebook<\/a> within an hour of the design\u2019s posting. Many asked where they could purchase a jersey or celebrated what they viewed as cultural inclusivity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">But other comments resonated as indicative of the deep polarization facing the country and the creeping politicization of everything from sporting events to musical entertainment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cLet\u2019s really celebrate black history \u2026 I\u2019ll bring the rope,\u201d one comment read, with another commenter responding, \u201chell yeah brother!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cavalrystrategies.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/35430585-724C-4774-BF52-F6A1E4F0D36C.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-306946\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Numerous comments questioned why there should be a Black Heritage Night but no such celebration of White people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis is just ridiculous. Where is the month-long celebration for America? Do any other groups get a month-long celebration? Italians, Asians, Hispanic WHATEVER we are all Americans,\u201d one commenter wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWhen is it Straight White People Month or Christian Month,\u201d another asked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Other comments (not edited) included:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2014 \u201cWhen is white heritage night?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chpk.com\/escalent-names-florida-city-gas-2024-customer-champion\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-716709\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/FCG-CS-Award-2025-FL-Politics-Ads-728-x-90-px.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2014 \u201cWhen\u2019s the white heritage month? I want to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2014 \u201cAnd Veterans, Presidents and those who died fighting for our country, get one day of recognition. One. Day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2014 \u201cIs there anything in the plans to celebrate white heritage or is that being racist? Why can\u2019t we just leave all that shit out of the game and go back to making it about hockey?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2014 \u201cSad that the teammates have to be subjected to dumb shit like this and LGBT crap. You\u2019re keeping racism and other judgments alive by pushing narratives to sell merch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u2014 \u201cWhy? Stop all of this,\u201d one commenter wrote, adding with an unfortunate typo, \u201cjust play hickey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">There was a meme wrapping it all into one package.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cOnly in America can an ethnic group have black awareness month, Black holiday, Black only colleges, Black only dating sites, Black only bars and clubs and turn around and call everyone else racists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pflagsafetyharbor.org\/about-us\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">PFLAG of Safety Harbor<\/a> chimed in with a counter punch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe comments on this page are exactly the reason nights like these are important,\u201d wrote the group, which offers support to the LGBTQ+ community. \u201cCelebrating diversity is not anti-American or anti anything. If there isn\u2019t a \u2018month dedicated to you,\u2019 consider yourself privileged that you aren\u2019t subjected to discrimination or hate just for existing as yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">There were even comments referencing the stereotype that Black Americans don\u2019t watch hockey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cGotta make those 5 fans happy,\u201d one such comment read.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">And let\u2019s pause there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The jersey reveal early Monday comes fresh off the Seattle Seahawks\u2019 29-13 win over the New England Patriots Sunday evening, where Bad Bunny\u2019s Halftime Show sparked outrage and even \u201calternative\u201d programming. In the days and weeks leading up to the Super Bowl, after Bad Bunny was announced as the halftime show performer, the internet went ablaze with dueling arguments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">On one hand, people celebrated him as an award-winning artist whose music includes deep symbology and represents passionate national pride. On the other side, there was outrage at having a performer whose work is exclusively performed in Spanish, with many incorrectly asserting that the artist is not American.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bad Bunny, whose name is Benito Antonio Mart\u00ednez Ocasio, is from Puerto Rico, which is a United States territory. He is a United States citizen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Spend any amount of time on social media reading comments about the Halftime Show and one will find varying levels of vitriol (along with, of course, plenty of praise). That includes from Robby Starbuck, a conservative activist who previously directed music videos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cHaving Bad Bunny do the Super Bowl halftime show ENTIRELY in Spanish, in the United States is like playing the national anthem in Chinese at the World Series or replacing hot dogs on the 4th of July with tofu. It\u2019s just not right,\u201d he wrote, adding that the NFL \u201cdisrespected the fans and the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">But of course the most famous comment criticizing the Bad Bunny performance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/sports\/bad-bunnys-super-bowl-halftime-show-ignites-trumps-fury-divides-viewers\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">came from President Donald Trump<\/a>, who panned it as \u201cabsolutely terrible\u201d and \u201cone of the worst, EVER.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt makes no sense, is an affront to the Greatness of America, and doesn\u2019t represent our standards of Success, Creativity, or Excellence. Nobody understands a word this guy is saying, and the dancing is disgusting, especially for young children that are watching from throughout the U.S.A., and all over the World,\u201d Trump wrote on Truth Social.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">It\u2019s worth noting that not being able to understand the words to a performance was a common refrain among critics of last year\u2019s Super Bowl halftime performance by Kendrick Lamar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">And as for Trump\u2019s comment about the dancing being \u201cdisgusting,\u201d his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/super-bowl-lx\/article\/kid-rock-backlash-underage-21341430.php\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">critics are quick to point out<\/a> that Kid Rock\u2019s 2001 song \u201cCool, Daddy Cool\u201d includes the line \u201cYoung ladies, young ladies, I like \u2018em underage,\u201d followed by \u201csome say that\u2019s statutory, but I say it\u2019s mandatory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Those who opted for the Turning Point USA-backed alternative halftime performance widely praised it as patriotic and positive, glossing over the bit of lyrical controversy in Kid Rock\u2019s catalogue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">But those who watched the official halftime performance widely praised Bad Bunny\u2019s show as its own version of deeply American, with imagery and symbolism highlighting long-standing struggles, such as the island\u2019s failing electrical grid, and its place in the American story. It also seemed to debunk common perceptions that conservatives have a monopoly on family values, with a love story and actual wedding as a central theme in the show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Overall, whether someone enjoyed one performance over the other largely came down to partisan leanings, with conservatives preferring the Kid Rock-featured show and liberals celebrating Bad Bunny\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Enter the Tampa Bay Lightning with its specialty jersey celebrating Black heritage and the intrusion of politics into sporting events continues, unabated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">And to those who view this trend solely through the lens of manufactured outrage \u2014 on any side \u2014 I encourage you to consider the concept of marketing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaculture.com\/insights\/audience-insights-report-super-bowl-enthusiasts\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">A Media Culture analysis<\/a> last year of the Super Bowl audience found that it was predominantly White, and that 60% of the viewing audience are members of Gen X or the Baby Boomers generation. Those demographics are already loyal Super Bowl enthusiasts unlikely to tune out the big game just because there\u2019s a performer they don\u2019t like.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">By selecting halftime performers who appeal to other demographics \u2014 younger audiences and people of color, for example \u2014 the National Football League is attempting to tap into new audiences. Think about how Taylor Swift\u2019s presence at previous Super Bowls featuring her now-fianc\u00e9 impacted viewership. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/business\/media\/2024\/taylor-swift-effect-super-bowl-female-tv-demos-soar-nfl-1234766989\/#:~:text=While%20she%20garnered%20just%2054,just%20the%20last%20four%20years\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">There was a 24% jump in female viewers<\/a> between the ages of 18 and 24 in the 2024 game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The saying goes, \u201crepresentation matters,\u201d and data clearly shows that to be true in attracting audiences who otherwise might not show up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1100154\/interest-level-hockey-ethnicity\/?srsltid=AfmBOopb9Mw1zeblAiW5Gc2CT1ACc7gMh7RglIp178_Ln9iwtoPcecFV#:~:text=Published%20by%20Statista%20Research%20Department,were%20avid%20fans%20of%20NHL.\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">a 2023 study from Statista<\/a> shows that the stereotype that African Americans are less likely to be hockey fans is actually a statistical fact, with only 10% of Black survey respondents indicating they were avid fans of the sport and 20% saying they were casual fans. It was the lowest level of support among all demographics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">So while supporters will celebrate the Lightning\u2019s recognition of Black History Month as inclusive, it\u2019s also a strategic marketing decision that could attract more attention to the sport among Black audiences. Might some who find offense in the celebration of Black heritage tune out or skip that game? Possibly.
