{"id":149380,"date":"2026-02-09T22:45:51","date_gmt":"2026-02-09T22:45:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/149380\/"},"modified":"2026-02-09T22:45:51","modified_gmt":"2026-02-09T22:45:51","slug":"florida-gop-considers-rule-change-to-clarify-evan-power-fundraising-capacity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/149380\/","title":{"rendered":"Florida GOP considers rule change to clarify Evan Power fundraising capacity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The executive committee for the <a href=\"https:\/\/florida.gop\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Republican Party of Florida<\/a> will decide Tuesday on a rule clarifying Chair Evan Power\u2019s abilities to fundraise while seeking federal office.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Officials with the party said the matter will simply set guidelines making clear Power cannot raise large sums personally for the state party, but that he can still act as Chair as he has done for months. The rule is being considered as Power <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/773688-evan-power-to-run-for-congress-to-succeed-retiring-neal-dunn\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">runs for an open seat<\/a> representing Florida\u2019s 2nd Congressional District.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But one of Power\u2019s opponents, lawyer Keith Gross, said the situation smacks of cronyism.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis is corruption, plain and simple. The Republican Party of Florida has now effectively acknowledged the illegality behind the scheme boosting Evan Power, and the rush to cover it up tells you everything you need to know,\u201d Gross said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A Rules Committee will meet Monday evening to consider a rule, and then the 40-member state Republican Executive Committee will address the issue on a conference phone call Tuesday morning. Power will likely be on the call, but cannot vote.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vieraforflorida.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-753828 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Luis-Viera-Ads-728x90-px.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The proposed Rule 33 formally establishes that a special committee will be named that includes no federal officeholders and will hold oversight over fundraising and spending in the state party\u2019s state accounts. That includes soliciting funds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">That\u2019s because federal candidates cannot raise more than $10,000 for a state party, part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/help-candidates-and-committees\/candidate-taking-receipts\/contribution-limits\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">soft money bans<\/a> in place in federal law. Officials in the party say Power had a role in raising large-dollar contributions after <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/651767-florida-gop-elects-evan-power-as-new-state-chair\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">his election<\/a> as Chair in 2024. That role has since been delegated to a full-time staffer in the state party for months. That party hire was made months before U.S. Rep. Neal Dunn announced his <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/773477-neal-dunn-to-retire-wont-seek-re-election-in-cd-2\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">retirement<\/a> and Power launched a campaign to succeed him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Under the new rule, the state would not be allowed to raise large sums, and oversight over those efforts would fall to a new committee instead of the Chair.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Already, Gross has <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/775685-keith-gross-accuses-evan-power-of-abusing-florida-gop-resources-to-boost-congressional-bid\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">filed a complaint<\/a> to the Federal Election Commission asserting Power wrongly used his position as Chair to leverage an advantage in the congressional race over other Republicans. He said the new rulemaking was more problematic behavior.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWithout the title he\u2019s weaponized to shield himself, Evan Power is an unelectable, scandal-plagued, no-name candidate who couldn\u2019t win a fair primary on merit alone,\u201d Gross said. \u201cThis wasn\u2019t about advancing conservative values or winning elections, it was about rigging the process to prop up a weak candidate through abuse of party resources.
