{"id":149493,"date":"2026-02-10T00:25:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-10T00:25:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/149493\/"},"modified":"2026-02-10T00:25:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-10T00:25:09","slug":"shore-acres-neighborhood-association-president-kevin-batdorf-set-to-join-st-pete-mayoral-contest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/149493\/","title":{"rendered":"Shore Acres neighborhood association President Kevin Batdorf set to join St. Pete mayoral contest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The St. Petersburg mayoral race grew more crowded with Shore Acres Neighborhood Association President <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/tag\/kevin-batdorf\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Kevin Batdorf<\/a> stepping into the fray, positioning himself as a sharp critic of City Hall leadership.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Batdorf argues the city needs a change in direction on infrastructure, transparency and growth management after years under the leadership of Mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/tag\/ken-welch\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Ken Welch<\/a>, who is running for re-election. He is also critical of City Council member <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/tag\/brandi-gabbard\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Brandi Gabbard<\/a> \u2013 who has announced her own bid to challenge Welch \u2013 as well as former Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/tag\/charlie-crist\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Charlie Crist<\/a>, who has publicly floated a run but has not formally entered the race \u2013\u00a0 although his PAC has already <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/772405-political-committee-linked-to-charlie-crist-hauls-record-725k-in-just-7-weeks\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">reported a substantial haul<\/a> to support a campaign. Perennial candidates <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/tag\/maria-scruggs\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Maria Scruggs<\/a> filed to run in August and <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/tag\/paul-congemi\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Paul Congemi<\/a> filed to run on Monday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Batdorf said Welch and Gabbard have both played roles in recent city decisions he views as failures, arguing voters deserve an alternative not tied to City Hall leadership during that period. He said Crist \u201chas name recognition, I don\u2019t know much else at this point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Batdorf, a St. Petersburg native and longtime real estate broker, said he plans to formally file for the race later this month or in early March and will begin collecting the required voter signatures to qualify for the ballot. He has not yet appointed a campaign treasurer or opened a campaign account and is working to line those details up before formally filing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis administration is probably the worst that the city\u2019s ever had,\u201d Batdorf said. \u201cThey failed at so many different things, not just the Rays, but hurricane response, cleanup, infrastructure issues.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chpk.com\/escalent-names-florida-city-gas-2024-customer-champion\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-716709\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/FCG-CS-Award-2025-FL-Politics-Ads-728-x-90-px.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A graduate of Gibbs High School in 1979, Batdorf has worked as a real estate broker since 1993. He said he began working at age 16, including time spent shucking oysters at a local restaurant, and later co-owned a watch company called Suntime Novelties.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Batdorf told Florida Politics he is frustrated with the current administration\u2019s handling of major city issues, including hurricane response, infrastructure conditions and the failed <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/tag\/tampa-bay-rays\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Tampa Bay Rays<\/a> stadium deal. He said Gabbard was right to question how the city is handling the future of the Rays\u2019 former <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/tag\/tropicana-field\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Tropicana Field<\/a> site in the <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/tag\/historic-gas-plant-district\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Historic Gas Plant District<\/a>, but argued she has also been \u201cpart of the problem\u201d as a member of City Council during the same period of decision-making. The Rays are currently <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/778479-after-pivotal-week-new-tampa-bay-rays-stadium-vision-goes-public-as-funding-questions-arise\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">negotiating with Tampa stakeholders<\/a> to relocate out of St. Pete.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If elected, Batdorf said his top priorities would include improving transparency in city government, overhauling the city\u2019s permitting system and addressing aging infrastructure. He called for \u201csmart growth\u201d policies, saying new development has not been properly managed and has worsened drainage and sewer problems across the city.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Batdorf said his criticisms extend beyond the stadium deal. He\u2019s concerned about how City Hall functions, particularly when it comes to permitting, storm response and long-term planning. He argued the city\u2019s permitting system is inefficient and unfriendly to residents and businesses, and should be modernized to better coordinate with outside agencies during emergencies.
