{"id":149579,"date":"2026-02-10T01:41:06","date_gmt":"2026-02-10T01:41:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/149579\/"},"modified":"2026-02-10T01:41:06","modified_gmt":"2026-02-10T01:41:06","slug":"fort-pierce-implements-emergency-measures-as-severe-beach-erosion-threatens-properties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/149579\/","title":{"rendered":"Fort Pierce implements emergency measures as severe beach erosion threatens properties"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">WPTV is continuing to look for answers as Fort Pierce city leaders implement emergency erosion control measures at Jetty Park Beach and parts of Hutchinson Island.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">WATCH BELOW: &#8216;We are doing the best we can with the situation that is given,&#8217; Madison Walters tells WPTV&#8217;s Tyler Hatfield<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Our Treasure Coast reporter Tyler Hatfield listened to local businesses in the area having to deal with less beach and learns from the city what&#8217;s being done to stop it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The most recent severe erosion is inching it ways to multiple properties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cIt could be destructive to property by undermining the property and collapsing it theoretically,\u201d said City Commissioner Michael Broderick. \u201cRoad sidewalks, etc., could be torn up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Now, Fort Pierce city leaders are implementing an emergency response to curb the erosion and hoping on Tuesday, to bring in more sand at a cost of approximately $500,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The erosion is also impacting the dune bar at Island Beach Bar and Restaurant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cWe are doing the best we can with the situation that is given,\u201d said Madison Walters, manager of Island Beach Bar and Restaurant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Walters said their dune bar served beachside drinks to customers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">With the erosion, they had to close the bar last week until the beach is fixed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cWe&#8217;re praying that it gets fixed soon,\u201d said Walter. \u201cAs someone who&#8217;s lived there their whole life, and locals and people that like to make this, part of their destination, it definitely is upsetting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">This comes as a $15 million beach nourishment project was scheduled in March for a mile stretch of coastline on Hutchinson Island.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Commissioner Broderick said the U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers failed to secure a vendor for the nourishment project last year\u2014putting it a full year behind schedule.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThe erosion now is so significant, homes, safety and property are at risk currently,\u201d said Broderick.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Walter said she wants to welcome customers back to the dune bar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cI just hope that we do find a permanent solution for everybody,\u201d said Walters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The Island Beach Bar and Restaurant is still open for business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Commissioner Broderick said on Monday, county and city leaders are meeting in the afternoon to discuss what equipment, materials and manpower are needed for a more sustainable temporary solution for the erosion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Jetty Park Beach is currently closed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright |\">Copyright 2026 Scripps Media, Inc.
