{"id":150484,"date":"2026-02-10T18:30:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-10T18:30:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/150484\/"},"modified":"2026-02-10T18:30:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-10T18:30:08","slug":"woman-sentenced-to-5-years-in-prison-after-guilty-plea-in-2006-dui-deadly-crash-in-hialeah-nbc-6-south-florida","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/150484\/","title":{"rendered":"Woman sentenced to 5 years in prison after guilty plea in 2006 DUI deadly crash in Hialeah \u2013 NBC 6 South Florida"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A woman who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcmiami.com\/news\/local\/fugitive-accused-of-killing-woman-in-2006-miami-crash-arrested-records\/3685186\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nbcmiami.com\/news\/local\/fugitive-accused-of-killing-woman-in-2006-miami-crash-arrested-records\/3685186\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">fatally struck another woman in Hialeah<\/a> while driving drunk nearly two decades ago and then fled the country before she was captured last year pleaded guilty on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Leydis Menendez Abdala, 52, was charged with vehicular homicide\/reckless manner and DUI manslaughter.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Fugitive-arrested.png\" loading=\"lazy\"   alt=\"Leydis Menendez Abdala\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tMiami-Dade CorrectionsMiami-Dade Corrections<\/p>\n<p>Leydis Menendez Abdala<\/p>\n<p>During her court appearance on Tuesday,  Abdala was sentenced to five years in prison and is required to complete substance abuse treatment. <\/p>\n<p>Her driver&#8217;s license will be revoked.<\/p>\n<p>According to Hialeah Police, the victim, Gloria Marcia Hall, left her home at around 4 a.m. on Aug. 12, 2006, and stopped at a light on 68th Street.<\/p>\n<p>As she made her way down the road, she was struck by a vehicle that ran a red light.<\/p>\n<p>Hall&#8217;s brother, Miami Police Commander Joaquin Freire, said during an interview that his sister died at the scene after being hit, while Abdala was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/090125-Gloria-Hall.png\" loading=\"lazy\"   alt=\"Gloria Hall\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tMiami Police DepartmentMiami Police Department<\/p>\n<p>Gloria Hall<\/p>\n<p>According to prosecutors, Abdala&#8217;s alcohol levels were more than twice the legal limit, but before she could be arrested, her boyfriend, a Hialeah Police officer, had given her the heads up, and she fled the country. Other officers possibly helped her escape, prosecutors alleged.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 20 years after fleeing the country, prosecutors got word Abdala was getting deported by Mexican officials, and she was extradited to South Florida and booked into a Miami-Dade jail on Aug. 29, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>When she made her first court appearance after being captured, Freire said it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcmiami.com\/news\/local\/victims-brother-faces-woman-arrested-in-2006-dui-crash-in-hialeah-in-court\/3686943\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nbcmiami.com\/news\/local\/victims-brother-faces-woman-arrested-in-2006-dui-crash-in-hialeah-in-court\/3686943\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">felt bittersweet<\/a> to see Abdala in person after all these years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s bringing back the pain that this person has caused my family and I. Not only that, is she didn&#8217;t accept responsibility for her actions.
