LARGO \u2014 Publix plans to close its supermarket at Largo Mall on Feb. 28 for demolition and construction of a new store, said Lindsey Willis, a marketing manager with the company. The project is expected to take more than a year to complete.<\/p>\n
The grocery chain will shutter the store at 10500 Ulmerton Road and replace it with a 51,908-square-foot facility, according to a building permit filed in June. The current building contains 78,984 square feet of heated space.<\/p>\n
The Largo Mall location was a renovated Albertson’s that Publix acquired and is now tearing down \u2014 continuing a trend across the Tampa Bay area as the company replaces converted stores with new construction.<\/p>\n
Publix converted the former Albertson’s and Safeway location after purchasing it. Property records show the building was constructed in 1989. The property, listed as Largo Mall Lot 6, is owned by PSM Exchange Company I LLC, which purchased it in 2018 for $13 million.<\/p>\n
The demolition and rebuild follows similar projects by Publix at former Albertson’s locations in St. Petersburg and Clearwater. In west St. Petersburg<\/a>, Publix demolished a renovated Albertson’s at 6605 38th Ave. N. in September 2024 and is building an $11 million, 57,658-square-foot replacement scheduled to open March 12. In Clearwater<\/a>, Publix converted a former Albertson’s at 1295 S.
