Tampa Bay History Center<\/a> feels Ybor is the perfect spot for one of the new state markers.<\/p>\n\u201cI think Ybor City really exemplifies a lot of what the United States represents,\u201d Kite-Powell said. \u201cYou can come down here, get a cup of caf\u00e9 con leche, have a Cuban sandwich, and just see the architecture and learn the history.\u201d<\/p>\n
That\u2019s the idea of new markers like the one in Ybor: to highlight an area of Florida\u2019s historical story.<\/p>\n
The sign is one of more than a hundred that FDOT installed across the state, with at least one located in each county.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe really wanted to make sure we\u2019re celebrating our country, everything about Florida and the USA,\u201d said Kris Carson with FDOT. \u201cWe decided to put these signs up. We worked with our local partners to decide what was important in every county so see what we could feature.\u201d<\/p>\n
For example, the sign in Ybor City has text explaining Ybor\u2019s historical significance in Florida and how its cigar manufacturing was a big part of the \u201cnew south\u201d in the 1880s after the Civil War.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt really did exemplify the “New South”; in that it was an industrial city. A city with a diverse population,\u201d Kite-Powell said.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s now one of more than a hundred places drivers can visit on a road trip around Florida for America\u2019s big birthday.<\/p>\n
FDOT made a booklet showing where all the signs are.
