(WCTV) – Leon County is looking to be reimbursed after it mobilized an emergency response in the face of unsanitary conditions at a Tallahassee area mobile home park last week.

The public health crisis occurred at the Florida Sun Estates Mobile Home Park and water was reportedly restored a week later. County Commission Chair Christian Caban said the cost was steep.

“The county had to intervene and provide emergency services to provide showers, water, toilets. That was a $33,000 cost to taxpayers due to a negligent landlord. And I don’t think that’s right,” Caban said.

Caban said residents were threatened with eviction for speaking out, something the mobile home park strictly denies.

More news out of the Big Bend:

“This wasn’t an act of God hurricane. This was pure negligence by a landlord who was deflecting responsibility on other governmental agencies, and quite frankly, also deflecting responsibility on their own tenants,” Caban said.

A lawyer for the mobile home park provided a statement.

Neither mobile home park management, ownership nor anyone associated with the mobile home park shut off water to residents. It appears the recent freezing temperatures caused water disruptions throughout the Tallahassee area including my client’s mobile home park some time Sunday morning. Mobile home park management immediately reached out to repair services resulting in restoration of water service by Wednesday afternoon.

Park ownership does not condone retaliation in any form and would never threaten residents with eviction for communicating their concerns. Park ownership respects residents’ rights to speak and encourages open conversation.

Park ownership will work with local officials and community partners, to support efforts assisting residents and the surrounding community in any reasonable way. My client has not yet received nor reviewed a formal demand. The demand letter, when received, will be reviewed and addressed through the appropriate process.

That statement above is the first we’ve heard directly from the owners of this mobile home park.

We asked the chairman about that statement. He called it misleading and said the water was not restored according to that timeline.

“Remember the property manager was telling county staff water was working Wednesday morning. When I showed up 2 hours later no water was present. Management was deliberately misleading residents and government officials,” Caban said.

To keep up with the latest news as it develops, follow WCTV on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Nextdoor and X (Twitter).

Have a news tip or see an error? Write to us here.
