{"id":154732,"date":"2026-02-13T19:41:11","date_gmt":"2026-02-13T19:41:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/154732\/"},"modified":"2026-02-13T19:41:11","modified_gmt":"2026-02-13T19:41:11","slug":"senate-earmarks-200m-for-citrus-research-far-more-than-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/154732\/","title":{"rendered":"Senate earmarks $200M for citrus research, far more than House"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Senate just released <a href=\"https:\/\/flsenate.gov\/Session\/Appropriations\/2026\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">spreadsheets<\/a> for its 2026-27 budget proposal, and they reveal several wedge issues that may intensify cross-rotunda budget negotiation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One major divide: citrus research spending.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Budgeters in the upper chamber are seeking a $204.5 million earmark to continue field trials, acquire trees and implement new technologies benefiting the Sunshine State\u2019s citrus industry \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/PublishedContent\/Offices\/2024-2026\/President\/Documents\/Make_Citrus_Great_Again_Set_for_Final_Passage.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">up from more than $100 million<\/a> set aside in the current budget.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Of the newly proposed sum, $150 million would be nonrecurring, with another $4.5 million coming from state trust fund sources.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Another $4.4 million would go to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fdacs.gov\/Agriculture-Industry\/Pests-and-Diseases\/Plant-Pests-and-Diseases\/Citrus-Health-Response-Program\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Citrus Health Response Program<\/a>, a non-research expenditure.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shutts.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-740415 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/FLPolitics-May-2025-728x90-1-scaled-e1748483753690.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/flhouse.gov\/Sections\/Documents\/loaddoc.aspx?PublicationType=Committees&amp;CommitteeId=3276&amp;Session=2026&amp;DocumentType=Proposed+Committee+Bills+(PCBs)&amp;FileName=PCB+BUC+26-01_GAA.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">House budget<\/a> for the next fiscal year, meanwhile, contemplates spending just $4 million on citrus research and $2.95 million on the Citrus Health Response Program.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gov. Ron DeSantis\u2019 Office proffered a plan splitting $19 million between citrus research and health response.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Florida dramatically increased citrus research appropriations beginning in Fiscal Year 2021-22, largely driven by efforts to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hillsboroughswcd.com\/florida-citrus-growers-applaud-governor-desantis-for-approving-140-million-to-revitalize-florida-s-citrus-industry\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">combat citrus greening disease<\/a> and revive the state\u2019s citrus production.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The FY 2025-26 appropriation alone included more than $104 million specifically for large-scale citrus research field trials on grove management, treatments, pest and disease control, and post-planting care.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Senate this year is also looking to spend $39.5 million on funding the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridacitrus.org\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Florida Department of Citrus<\/a>, including $5 million on advertising and $2 million on a citrus recovery program; $10 million on citrus nursery and packaging infrastructure; and $1 million on the Citrus County Fair Association.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-773717 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/728x90.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The House plan includes no such appropriations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Florida\u2019s citrus industry provides a more than $6.9 billion economic impact and employs tens of thousands of residents, according to Senate President Ben Albritton, who vowed at the end of last year\u2019s protracted and contentious budgeting process that \u201ccitrus is not going down on (his) watch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe\u2019re on the edge of something special,\u201d he said. \u201cFlorida citrus is making a comeback, one tree at a time.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Senate just released spreadsheets for its 2026-27 budget proposal, and they reveal several wedge issues that may&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":154733,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[4218,9935,74553,74554,74555,4758,28,4753,30,29,74556],"class_list":{"0":"post-154732","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-florida","8":"tag-ben-albritton","9":"tag-budget","10":"tag-budget-negotiations","11":"tag-citrus-health-response-program","12":"tag-citrus-industry","13":"tag-citrus-research","14":"tag-florida","15":"tag-florida-citrus-industry","16":"tag-florida-headlines","17":"tag-florida-news","18":"tag-senate-budget"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/154732","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=154732"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/154732\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/154733"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=154732"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=154732"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=154732"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
