They hope their actions can inspire others to donate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">JACKSONVILLE, Fla.  \u2013 Shannon and Rivean Riley are an example of unconditional love and a testament to how organ donation can save lives and keep families whole.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Rivean Riley faced kidney issues as a teenager, spending about three months in the hospital. At the time, he was prepared to start dialysis, a treatment that cleans the blood when the kidneys fail; however, his health improved without the need for dialysis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Twenty years later, Riley was diagnosed with heart failure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI came to Mayo,\u201d Rivean said. \u201cTo hear the first word, transplant, we didn\u2019t know that was coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In 2024, he received a heart transplant at the Mayo Clinic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The donor was a 23-year-old man who died in a traffic crash. His mother wanted his organs donated locally. The Rileys have stayed in touch with the donor\u2019s family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Later, Rivean\u2019s kidney health declined again. His wife, Shannon, was ready to donate her kidney to save him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWe went through the process of being evaluated to become a donor and we were the same blood type,\u201d Shannon said. \u201cOne of the first things we found out was that we couldn\u2019t be a direct match due to antibodies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">But Shannon didn\u2019t stop there. In 2025, she donated a kidney to another person, creating a voucher that allowed her husband to receive a kidney from someone else.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cJuly 10th \u2014 I am a Bahamian, so that\u2019s our independence day \u2014 I got an independence day kidney,\u201d Rivean said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">When asked how he felt about his wife\u2019s sacrifice, Rivean said, \u201cJust the idea if you could give, it\u2019s the world to me, too, because I definitely know that the love is there&#8230; and that someone else could have a healthy life too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Now that both have donated organs, they have cared for each other at different times. Beyond their love for each other, they want to stay alive for their four children.
