A candlelit dinner, a cozy fire, and lots of chocolate.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

That is the average Feb. 14 experience \u2014 but many do not share it with a romantic partner. Some celebrate Galentine\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n

Galentine\u2019s<\/a> is an unofficial holiday that has been celebrated in recent years as an alternative to Valentine\u2019s Day.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt doesn\u2019t have to be in a romantic way, which is why it\u2019s so different from Valentine\u2019s Day, because it\u2019s not about that romantic love,\u201d said English major Lauren Lee. \u201cIt\u2019s about other levels of love that exist, love that exists within your friendships.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The holiday was first portrayed in 2010, in an episode of the popular TV show \u201cParks and Recreation\u201d that aired on Feb. 11.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Since this episode aired, viewers also begun to celebrate, which led to Galentine\u2019s Day becoming a widespread phenomenon that only continues to grow in popularity.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A potential reason for Galentine\u2019s success\u00a0is the depression<\/a> many single people\u00a0often experience during Valentine\u2019s Day due to the increased attention on romantic relationships and feelings.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, people are also beginning to value friendships over romantic relationships, Lee said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think traditions and values are changing across society, across generations. And people \u2014 newer generations \u2014 are more in tune with love and with sharing their emotions with each other,\u201d she told The Crow\u2019s Nest. \u201cI think we just want to show that love is love, no matter what dynamic the relationship is to the person.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Senior health sciences major and co-president of Planned Parenthood Generation Action, Hannah Butterfield, noted that women are particularly drawn to friendships over romance because of difficulties that come with the modern dating scene.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Junior political science major, Brianna Gutierrez, and junior political science and sustainability major and governor of the University of South Florida St. Petersburg\u2019s student government, Elise Prophete, agreed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of women are more independent now and they don\u2019t feel the need to have plans with significant others anymore,\u201d Gutierrez said. \u201cBecause what do you need them for? You have your girls.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Lee cited how women now have the option to stay single for longer periods of their lives and are choosing to take it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cBack in the 1900s, we were getting married at 20. Now we\u2019re getting married closer to 30, so now we have our 20s where we\u2019re single and we have love to give, but we don\u2019t exactly have a partner to give it to. So instead, we put that love into our friendships,\u201d Lee said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While the holiday is not only celebrated by women and girls, they do make up the majority of celebrants\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s still this stigmatism against men sharing feelings with each other,\u201d Lee said. \u201cI think they struggle to open up to each other in fear of being looked at as weak for having emotions.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Prophete echoed a similar sentiment.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOur society is a place where we\u2019re more accepting of women being loving towards one another than men,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Galentine\u2019s is a way for people to celebrate their loved ones, thus it is not exclusive to women.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think knowing that your friends love you and having that feeling of support, that\u2019s a benefit of Galentine\u2019s,\u201d Lee said.\u00a0
\u00a0<\/p>\n

For Galentine\u2019s this year, Lee wants to have dinner and a charcuterie board and paint candles with her friends.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Butterfield intends to visit markets<\/a> such as Localtopia with her friends, then have a night in.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Gutierrez and Prophete are having a night in. They spoke about making mocktails and spending time together.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201c[Galentine\u2019s is] a magical experience, honestly,\u201d Prophete said. \u201cI think it\u2019s a time to connect with people who mean a lot to you, not just in a romantic sense, but like your soul ties.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
