FOX 13&#8217;s Heather Healy talked with Rodney Kite-Powell with the Tampa History Center about the significance of it all.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">TAMPA &#8211; While many Americans enjoy a long weekend on Presidents\u2019 Day, the holiday\u2019s origins \u2014 and its local connections \u2014 often go overlooked.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">Presidents\u2019 Day was originally established to celebrate George Washington\u2019s birthday on February 22. Over time, the observance shifted to the third Monday in February, expanding to honor all U.S. presidents.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">But in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/tag\/us\/fl\/hillsborough\/tampa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Tampa<\/a>, presidential history isn\u2019t just commemorated once a year, it\u2019s woven into the city itself.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">Take a walk through downtown Tampa, and you\u2019ll find a familiar pattern: Washington, Jefferson, Polk, Pierce, Harrison, Tyler \u2014 and even Zack Street, named for Zachary Taylor.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WTVT\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-2899190a=\"\">What they&#8217;re saying:<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">According to Rodney Kite-Powell of the Tampa Bay History Center, those names trace back to the city\u2019s earliest planned days.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">&#8220;It&#8217;s interesting to look at our downtown street grid,&#8221; Kite-Powell explained. &#8220;You will see the name of Zachary Taylor on Zack Street downtown along with several other presidents; Washington, Jefferson, Polk, Tyler.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/vlcsnap-2026-02-16-11h29m26s886.png\" alt=\"\" data-v-0dea8073=\"\"\/>  <\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/news\/carrollwood-backyard-murder-debra-patton-sentenced-sisters-murder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Debra Patton sentenced to life in prison for sister&#8217;s murder<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">The reason dates to the 1840s, when Tampa\u2019s street grid was created by John Jackson.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">&#8220;He was really fond of Revolutionary heroes, which is where you get some of the early ones,&#8221; Kite-Powell said. &#8220;But also, the politics of the time. So, you find a lot of presidents from his era going backward right in our own downtown streets,&#8221; Kite-Powell said.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">One of Tampa\u2019s most recognizable roads carries a more recent presidential story.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">John F. Kennedy Boulevard wasn\u2019t always Kennedy.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">&#8220;Kennedy became Kennedy in December 1963, just a month after he was assassinated in Dallas,&#8221; Kite-Powell noted.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">The renaming held special meaning for Tampa.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">&#8220;He was here three days before,&#8221; Kite-Powell said. &#8220;His motorcade here in Tampa was the last one that he survived.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">Shortly after Kennedy\u2019s assassination, Lafayette Street was renamed in his honor \u2014 the same street where the president had traveled during his visit.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">Before becoming America\u2019s 26th president, Teddy Roosevelt made an important stop in Tampa, one that helped launch his national legend.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WTVT\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-2899190a=\"\">The backstory:<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">In 1898, Roosevelt stepped away from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/tag\/politics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">politics <\/a>to form the volunteer cavalry unit known as the Rough Riders. The regiment, made up of cowboys, Ivy Leaguers, and adventurers, trained in Tampa before deploying to Cuba during the Spanish-American War.<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/vlcsnap-2026-02-16-11h28m55s135.png\" alt=\"\" data-v-0dea8073=\"\"\/>  <\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/news\/parkland-shooting-battle-over-florida-gun-laws-continues-eight-years-after-17-killed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Parkland shooting: Battle over Florida gun laws continues eight years after 17 killed<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">Thousands of troops gathered near Port Tampa, including Roosevelt and his men.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">Selena Martinez of the Henry B. Plant Museum said Roosevelt carefully shaped his public image during this time.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">&#8220;Teddy Roosevelt bought his friend, Richard Harding Davis, who was a journalist,&#8221; Martinez said.\u00a0 &#8220;He&#8217;s going to watch the whole thing, and he&#8217;s going to say, this guy is incredible. He single-handedly took this charge up a hill. He captured the city, and he helped save everybody. He&#8217;s an American hero. He&#8217;s an American war hero. And there&#8217;s going to be depictions of him throughout the newspapers across the country. And they&#8217;re going to be so impressed with this legend, Teddy Roosevelt, that he&#8217;s going to be able to become McKinley&#8217;s vice president. And when McKinly is assassinated, he will then become the president, and he&#8217;s going to get elected for another term. So, Teddy Roosevelt and his legend started here,&#8221; Martinez added.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">Roosevelt\u2019s wife, Edith Roosevelt, also spent time in Tampa, staying at the Tampa Bay Hotel during the regiment\u2019s training period.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">Long before he became president, Zachary Taylor left his mark on Tampa during a turbulent chapter of Florida\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/vlcsnap-2026-02-16-11h28m49s905.png\" alt=\"\" data-v-0dea8073=\"\"\/>  <\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">Taylor was stationed at Fort Brooke, which served as a key military headquarters during the Second Seminole War, beginning in 1835.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">&#8220;Taylor was actually stationed here in Tampa at Fort Brooke,&#8221; Kite-Powell said. &#8220;Fort Brooke was the headquarters of the Army\u2019s engagement against the Seminoles.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">Taylor\u2019s leadership during the conflict elevated his national profile. He later gained widespread fame in the Mexican American War, a reputation that ultimately propelled him to the presidency in 1848.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">From street names to military campaigns, Tampa\u2019s ties to U.S. presidents run deeper than many residents realize.<\/p>\n<p data-v-2899190a=\"\">Whether it\u2019s Roosevelt\u2019s rise to fame, Taylor\u2019s early military career, or Kennedy\u2019s motorcade, Tampa\u2019s landscape quietly reflects chapters of American history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"group-source-paragraph\" data-v-4fbf7207=\"\">The Source: Information for this story was gathered from historian Selena Martinez of the Henry B.
