MATLACHA – Businesses in Matlacha are bouncing back after hurricanes Ian, Helene and Milton, but construction on the island’s main bridge is causing new challenges.<\/p>\n
Construction crews began the final phase of work on the Little Pine Island Bridge in January. Business owners say the ongoing project adds to their frustration.<\/p>\n
Cindee Tolliver, owner of Trader’s Hitching Post since 1994, shared her struggles. “My numbers last year were hitting numbers that I experienced in 1997,” said Tolliver.<\/p>\n
She explained that after the hurricanes, making ends meet has been tough. “We’re trying to get recovered, and we had to get SBA loan too,” said Tolliver.<\/p>\n
Tolliver mentioned that the construction has affected every business on the island and even those in Cape Coral. “It’s been very difficult, and we’re all pretty tired of the disrespect we feel we’ve gotten from the county, from Florida government,” she said.<\/p>\n
The Florida Department of Transportation is currently installing traffic railings and the parapet wall. Tolliver noted the delays have hurt businesses. “We did not get two lane traffic until April of 25 which effectively put several businesses out,” she said.<\/p>\n
Despite the challenges, Tolliver acknowledged the island’s progress since the hurricanes. “We’re all hoping and praying that they figure out how to get that bridge done without closing down a lane of traffic,” she said.<\/p>\n
