Jesse Jackson has died, leaving behind decades of advocacy for communities across the nation, including in Northeast Florida.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/national\/2026\/02\/17\/there-was-a-bridge-called-jesse-jackson-across-decades-of-civil-rights-advocacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/national\/2026\/02\/17\/there-was-a-bridge-called-jesse-jackson-across-decades-of-civil-rights-advocacy\/\">There was \u2018a bridge called Jesse Jackson\u2019 across decades of civil rights advocacy<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Jackson\u2019s work in the civil rights movement spanned more than half a century, beginning in the mid-1960s when he joined the struggle against racial segregation and discrimination. Over the years, he became known for his powerful oratory and grassroots organizing, famously declaring, \u201cI may be poor, but I am somebody. I may be on welfare, but I am somebody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Even as he battled a rare brain disorder in recent years, Jackson continued his advocacy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Most recently, he spoke out in support of Jacksonville driver <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/topic\/William_McNeil_Jr.\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/topic\/William_McNeil_Jr.\/\">William McNeil Jr.<\/a>, who was violently arrested by the Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office last year. Jackson also attended the 2022 trial in Brunswick, Georgia, for the men convicted in the killing of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/topic\/Ahmaud_Arbery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/topic\/Ahmaud_Arbery\/\">Ahmaud Arbery<\/a>, sitting with the victim\u2019s family in a show of solidarity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Local civil rights historian and author Rodney Hurst said he first met Jackson as a teenager and recalled the early days of the movement following the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cAnd Jesse, like others, were just dealing with the concept of fighting racism, fighting discrimination,\u201d Hurst said. \u201cThese were Black students who knew that something needed to be done, but did not know what.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Hurst said Jackson possessed an extraordinary ability to inspire action and connect local struggles to a broader national movement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThis is a man talking about issues that impact Black folk from coast to coast,\u201d Hurst said. \u201cEven though you\u2019re dealing with local problems here in Jacksonville, they\u2019re the same problems Blacks are dealing with in other parts of this country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Jackson made several trips to North Florida over the years. In 2002, he eulogized Olympic gold medalist Bob Hayes in Jacksonville. He also attended rallies at Edward Waters College and appeared at the criminal trial of former U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Hurst described Jackson as a \u201cbaton passer\u201d who understood the importance of preparing the next generation of leaders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cJesse ran the first part of the race quite well,\u201d Hurst said. \u201cBut he was always looking to pass the baton.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Jackson\u2019s 1984 and 1988 presidential campaigns challenged long-standing assumptions about who could seek the nation\u2019s highest office.
